Janelle Monáe Plans Our Road Trip Playlist & More!

Snazzy songstress Janelle Monáe transformed the Nokia Club into an all-out dance party earlier this week, and we've got the sore soles to prove it! The newly minted CoverGirl brought down the house at the launch of Nokia Music when she covered The Jackson 5's "I Want You Back," danced like a machine to songs off her last album ArchAndroid, and capped off the concert with an explosion of confetti. You bet we were screaming "encore" after all that madness!
Of course, the entire crowd was on their feet and shaking their thangs during songs like "Tightrope" (where Monáe was joined on stage by opener Big Boi), and her newest song "Electric Lady," which is so worth the $0.99 on iTunes!

Rocking her signature tuxedo and perfectly coiffed hair, Monáe mused on some musical questions, and clued us into the number one album she'd pack on her next road trip. Tune in to our R29 interview, below!

Which song could only be about Los Angeles?
"I think Biggie's 'I'm Going Back to Cali.' I'm going back to Cali, Cali. I mean, it's Cali, but I think of Los Angeles. It's the first city I think of in California."

Which song would people be surprised to know you love?
"Which song? I have a pretty eclectic taste and palette. And, I think in the albums I've put out this far, I hope people are aware of that and I have an appreciation for all types of music. So, I don't actually know!"

Which song defines your teens?
"I think it would have to be 'Just A Girl' by No Doubt because it was such a rebellious time. I was really understanding the power of being a woman and a young lady."

If you were to drive across America, which album would you take with you?
"I would probably take The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. I think that the songs in there are life songs. Those are songs that elevate you and make you think about where you are as a person, and where you'd like to be. It really touches the core and I think it's just a classic, timeless album."

Which song do you know all the words to?
"The Jackson 5's 'I Want You Back.'"
