Hannah Teter Talks Winter Skin, Kate Upton, And What She Won’t Wear

hannah-teter
In case you were not yet aware, Hannah Teter is one badass babe. The winter sport wunderkind is a true tour de force on her board, racking up medals (including those of the Olympic variety) on the halfpipe left, right, and center. This Burton girl also knows a thing or two about keeping her skin healthy and gorgeous in the winter months.
Along with the usual dryness and flaking we all experience, Teter also deals with the added stress of spending a good majority of her time in colder climes and higher altitudes, meaning she's a bonafide expert on cold-weather complexion care. We've been fans of the down-to-earth 26-year-old ever since we first saw her on the slopes, and not just for her high-flying ways — did you know she donates all of her winnings to charity? How rad is that?

While she's currently in Vail for the Burton U.S. Open (good luck, girl!), Teter was gracious enough to grant us a quick interview to talk about her beauty secrets, the importance of wearing sunscreen in the winter (something she's so passionate about, Shiseido is sponsoring her at the competition, a first for the brand), why she looks up to Kate Upton, and what fashion trend totally grosses her out. Read on to get the scoop.

Tell us a bit about your skin. Is it usually pretty good or do you have issues with it?
"My skin gets dry pretty easily, especially at high elevations in sub-zero temperatures! I wear a face mask usually when it's super-cold outside, and sometimes that makes me break out."

What are some specific challenges you have with your skin with your line of work?
"I am constantly battling to have awesome skin while traveling and competing. I care about how my skin appears, because if you can look good snowboarding while having fun with it, it’s a double whammy."

Sunscreen in the winter is not something everyone does. Why do you think that is?

"I think it's actually more important to wear sunscreen in the winter when you're hitting the slopes, because the reflection off the snow at high altitudes basically doubles its strength. I've seen too many people get really sunburned because they didn't wear sunscreen on the hill. An easy way to fix this is to use a high-quality sunscreen that's protective."

Do you play around with your hair and makeup? What are some of your favorite looks to try?
"I play with hair and makeup all the time. Some favorite looks I like are putting bright-colored eyeshadow under my eyes as an eyeliner. Like today, I was wearing teal blue and since my eyes are blue, it made them look extra dreamy."

Are there any trends you see on girls that make you just go huh?
"I don't get the whole fur clothing trend — that really grosses me out."

Are there any hair or makeup trends that seem really cool that you want to try?
"I love when someone gets wild with their hairstyle. One of my friends just dyed her hair purple and it looks hot!"

What are your top five must-have beauty products?
"Shiseido Sun Protection Lip Treatment, because it protects sensitive lips and lasts. I wear Young Living's Peace & Calming Essential Oil on my neck almost every day and it makes me feel grounded. Desert Essence Exfoliating Shea Butter Scrub, because there's nothing like a good scrub down to cleanse the day away. I can never get enough hydration in my hair, so I like Giovanni Cosmetics 2Chic Avocado & Olive Oil Ultra-Moist Shampoo. And Shiseido Sun Protection Stick Foundation, because it's the best sunscreen for training on the mountain."

Whose beauty look do you really admire?
"I admire Kate Upton 'cause she's a badass. She’s been on the cover of Sports Illustrated's swimsuit issue twice, so she's definitely doing something right!"

Is it tough for you being on the road all the time? What kind of havoc does that wreak on your skin?
"Traveling is super-harsh on my skin, because it's stressful and the recycled air on planes makes you feel greasy. I usually break out after I travel a long distance. I notice if I bring a spritzer toner and take immune-boosting supplements, I do much better."
