You Can Thank Hollywood, Not France, For The French Manicure

The French manicure has been the go-to style for any woman in search for a classic, classy, neutral nail for as long as most of us can remember. And since we equate French women with simplistic and chic style, it all made sense. And then WWD decided to blow our minds this morning.
As the history goes, the two-tone mani was more a piece of Tinseltown history than anything else. As WWD reports, in the '70s, Jeff Pink — the creator of Orly —created the white-tip-and-natural-base look as a response to the movie sets that were bogged down by the task of changing an actress' nail color for every costume change she made. The entertainment industry completely ate up Pink's new, clean, time-saving mani, but when he brought his genius little nail art trick to the runways of France, that's when the trend really gained notoriety in the states (go figure, right?). So, sure, maybe the movie industry and Pink didn't get a chance to coin the iconic beauty trend, but we think it's okay — after all, the Hollywood manicure doesn't exactly have the same ring to it.
