This Is Our Jam: Flying Lotus, “Putty Boy Strut”

L.A. beatmaking extraordinaire Lying Lotus is about to release his third LP, the twisting, impossibly intricate Until The Quiet Comes. You can take it from us: the record is a beast. “Putty Boy Strut,” though, is certainly one of the weirder tracks on the album. While other cuts on Quiet feature heavyweights Thom Yorke and Erykah Badu, “Putty Boy Strut” exists as an outlier — its own sunny detour. Off-kilter, squeaky, possibly even wonky, the track showcases FlyLo's wicked sense of humor. This is wonderfully highlighted by the track’s accompanying Cyriak Harris-directed video, which he fills with dim-witted robots marching to their doom. Wait for the ending, though, where the punchline — like the track — has its own warped beauty.
