Parker Posey Isn't Ready To Join Twitter

There are so many reasons to love actress Parker Posey. For us, it’s always been about the Christopher Guest movies she’s starred in (A Mighty Wind, Best In Show, Waiting for Guffman), among other things. Posey’s humor has always been aligned with ours, and she’s been on The New Potato’s coveted list for quite some time now. So, when Posey suggested a shoot-and-chat at ABC Kitchen (immediately after she had broken her wrist, no less), we thought, what better way to hang with a favorite actress of ours than at one of our favorite NYC spots? No matter what kind of mood you're in, this is a foodie interview to make you laugh.
From start to finish, what would be your ideal food day?
Yogurt and berries in the morning or fresh cantaloupe. Maybe throw some trail mix in there, maybe not, and maybe sprinkle some ground flax seeds on top. Then, I’d sit in a huge custom baby high chair, and I’d throw it everywhere.
For lunch, I would calm down and have a nice salad. Perhaps grill some tofu and okra on my Cuisinart Griddler. I’d reach into my fridge for all of my favorite salad stuff that’s already been chopped up magically by my Cuisinart Food Processor. My lettuces would be a wild variety of bitter and sweet, rich in vitamin C, and of course, from ABC Kitchen’s CSA [Community Supported Agriculture]! I’d mix them with romaine hearts, carrots, broccoli, Brussels sprouts…basically whatever I wanted. Then, I’d go out for a walk, and saunter into City Bakery for a pretzel croissant or a chocolate chip cookie.
At night, I’d have a whole cooked fish at my friend Jen’s house. She would stuff it with fresh herbs and put it on the barbecue grill outside her humble, charming Brooklyn abode. The fish would be fresh from her fish guy at the market — support the locals! I would bring some of this green sauce called Shug from my favorite Middle Eastern place, Taim — it’s great on everything.
What’s your drink?
White wine spritzer, vodka martini, or a pinot noir. I always drink seltzer out of a can. I like it cold outta the fridge!
How do you always start your day on a good note?
By waking up not worried! And, having a delicious cup of Mountain Grown. I like to act out the Folgers coffee commercial when I pour myself a fresh brew: “Parker, this is a delicious cup of coffee you’ve made.” Except it’s not Folgers; it’s a French roast that doesn’t leave me feeling cracked out.
What are your vices?
I worry, I stress, I suffer, I complain, and I forget. I get too serious and drastic. That all stops now!
What’s always in your bag on set?
That’s up to the makeup artist. I like those Listerine strips and tiny Altoids. I like Jolly Rancher fire candy; I keep them in my bag like a grandma.
Any pre- and post- shoot routines? What are they?
I like having nervous breakdowns before and after shooting. They always take me by surprise.
What always makes you laugh?
Silliness makes me laugh. I didn’t laugh for a long time as a baby and my parents were worried about me (I was premature), and then a dachshund walked by and I couldn’t stop laughing. Dogs make me laugh — different breeds and their personalities. And, the owners too. A lot of them are just charming and funny.

Who haven’t you gotten to work with, that you'd still like to work with?
Sophia Coppola, and sad to say, but most of the mainstream directors of my generation! Wes Anderson, Paul Thomas Anderson, David O. Russell, and Steven Soderbergh can do no wrong. However, I just worked with Woody Allen, and that was truly special. I learned a lot.
Funniest comment you¹ve heard in the past six months…
I can’t remember these funny comment questions; my brain is a sieve. I keep moving forward, and I could tell you I’ve laughed, of course, but I have always been really bad at remembering jokes. People acting silly and childlike is my favorite kind of laugh. Chris Kattan’s characters, and Jimmy Fallon when he dances – love that silliness! I was eating coffee ice cream with [my friend] Marcia, who is eighty-something years old, and she kept saying “Isn’t this terrible? Here, one more bite,” and passing me the carton. We were both laughing hysterically.
What are the different ways you approach serious roles versus comedic roles?
I approach it all the same. I never know what I’m doing. I always think, “This is it. This is my last job. This is when they’ll all see I don’t know what I’m doing and I’ll never work again.” I love good material, and acting can feel like detective work or a sport. I feel like I’m surfing sometimes, or that I’ve been thrown into water. I walk around a lot when I begin something here in New York, and meditate on the part I’m about to do.
Three words to describe social media…
“I DON’T KNOW.” I need to get on it though. I’m just so ole-timey, and I like my privacy and my solitude. I get a little Orwellian about it all, but it’s hubris on my part. Who am I to deny these times? And, I do like to connect.
To our knowledge, you’re not on Twitter. Can you give us one 140-character message for the world?
Hello Twitter audience, it’s Parker Posey. If there’s someone that says she’s me on Twitter, I’m here to say she’s not me! Has anyone said yet, “I tweet, therefore I twam”? How is everybody? I’m good, thanks for asking. Still doing it, still here. I guess I’ll get the hang of it once I sign on…when I get a friend to show me how to do that. It’ll be like passing a note in a giant classroom. I’m a hands-on type of person. I like the actual paper. I haven’t really changed with these times or made the jump. The gals at The New Potato were nice, so I’ll make the jump on their backs! I met them ‘cuz I’m hooked up with the ABCSA, which brings in Hudson Valley farmers to New York City. “If you can afford to support your local farmers, do. Wherever you are.”
