This Mother-Daughter Duo Has An Enviable Vintage Collection

Fashion definitely runs in the Latner family’s blood: Grandmother (we like to call her “Glam-ma”) to granddaughter, their luxe collection of family heirlooms has withstood the test of time. Launched in 1999 by Momma Lynda — a “bored housewife with a lot of old clothes” — their site Vintage Couture allowed like-minded collectors to buy and swap stones and clothes online. The mother-daughter duo spends their days scouring the archives for their keen, appointment-only clientele, which includes local collectors and celebs including Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen.
On top of Vintage Couture, Yael is busy blogging it up on her site, Rantings Of A Shopaholic, which curates her not-so-secret love for all things Christopher Kane, Proenza Schouler, and her obsession with Miu Miu bags (click on for further proof!). Her most recent startup, BeTrendMe, was founded with her hubby Dan Kanter, who just so happens to be Justin Bieber’s musical director and guitarist. Momma Lynda's love for vintage treasures trickled down to Yael, who's rocked major labels from the womb. (Yeah, we carried Hermès bags to our best friend’s bat mitzvahs, too.)
In fact, it was Lynda who, back in 2007, tapped Tommy Ton, a little-known street-style star at the time, sent him off to Europe to cover the shows, and gave him the big break he needed. Today, we peek into their private showroom and “permanent collection,” which holds the rarest Chanel goods we’ve ever laid eyes on, and racks upon racks of vintage Pucci, Lanvin, and Courrèges.

"Bored housewife with lots of old clothes? Not really, but the growth in browsing online in the late '90s encouraged me to look for similar-minded people with vintage clothes for sale. This led to the creation of Vintage Couture. Though not pre-eBay, the concept was to allow collectors to sell and buy through the website — a relatively unique idea at the time. It helped that my 16-year-old nephew was able to put together a commercial website in 48 hours."

"While hosting our annual vintage trunk show at Distractions, the fashion-forward boutique in Aspen, Colorado, I fell in love with this dress from their first collection. It was the beginning of my love affair with Jack and Lazaro. The chartreuse PS1 I got in LA on my birthday, and I carried it for a year straight until I got the purple one so I could give it a rest. The clutch was on sale at Harvey Nichols in London, and while orange isn't really my color, this clutch is a lifesaver in a fashion emergency. The color really pops!"

Lynda Latner: "I know fur is not PC, but sadly this one has been a jacket since the '60s. Even in this state it deserves respect and a good home. The chairs are covered in vintage mohair velvet that I found in the '70s in NYC and kept until I found the right chairs — three years ago."

Yael Kanter: "I believe that vintage fur is the way to go. There is less guilt associated with it, and really you are allowing the fur to live out its destiny. I would never condone a leopard fur today but this jacket is hard to resist."

"This is an incredible Dior haute couture belt from the Ferré era. It is like the WWE belt for the fashion olympics. It's great paired with a fabulous, red silk dress."

"Evidently, I had a Belgian Loafer problem in the mid-'80s! Or, maybe I was longing for the preppy look? Whatever the case, I love, love, love them, and never miss a chance to wear them summer or winter."

Lynda Latner: "Iconic collectible. Every collectors staple item. I love having them in our inventory."

Yael Kanter: "I have a soft spot for Courrèges. I wore head to toe vintage Courrèges for my high school prom. It was obviously my mother’s idea and she sourced the outfit. I felt like I stepped out of the mod 60’s. It was so fabulous."

"Obsessed! As you can see, I am a huge fan of Miuccia and I can’t get enough of the handbags. I always look forward to the next season. Handbags are the most versatile accessory, and when I find a bag I love, I wear it to death."

Lynda Latner: "There are times when I am out on a buying trip and I find a piece that takes my breath away. A Gucci vicuna coat is one of those dream buys. I broke down and stashed it in my closet, or as I like to say, it’s in the 'permanent archives.'"

Yael Kanter: "This works for me because I know that I can borrow this coat and other pieces in the 'permanent archives!'"

All: Vintage Gucci.

Lynda Latner: "At 70% off in 1989, these dream shoes became mine. They are my go-to summer flats and have stood the test of time."

Yael Kanter: "My mother’s feet are slightly bigger than mine so I have never been able to borrow these shoes. When I saw this gorgeous bag in the same jewel print at a vintage show years ago, it was finally my chance to have a piece of that collection!"

Lynda Latner: "Diamonds are a girl’s best friend! This 1960s cocktail dress from the Vintage Couture inventory is like body jewelry — just add earrings."

"Here at Vintage Couture, we love really insane, vintage sunglasses. Even if you are shy about wearing vintage, a killer pair of sunglasses, like these Pucci or Montana ones, show you have an eye for fashion."

"The photo of Debbie and Carrie Fisher was captured by Ron Gallela. It was given to me as a thank you for an installation of Hollywood Fashion that I curated for Holt Renfrew back in 2003. I love this photo because Debbie and Carrie are the epitome of a fashionable mother-daughter duo. Both are fashion icons and know a thing or two about vintage clothes. Here at VC, we really love 1960s Kelly bags. They are classic and timeless, and who can resist chocolate croc?"

"2006 and 2007 were my favorite Chloé collections. Not only did I wear these two pieces to the pre-wedding occasions for my eldest daughter, but the white one was so captivating that it got me a front row seat at the Christian Lacroix Couture show in Paris one summer."

Lynda Latner: "The killer gold brocade couture suit is my mother’s from the '60s, and the spectator heels are Vintage Couture inventory and date from the late '80s, early '90s. The shoes remind me of the ones that the Pearly Queen wore in My Fair Lady."

Yael Kanter: "I love Chanel handbags, and vintage bags have a pre-loved feel that you can't get in a store. The mini drawstring one is the perfect night out bag and the sunglasses case on a chain fits a Blackberry or iPhone perfectly! Now, I always know where my phone is."

"My style is very laid-back — I like to wear jeans and sneakers — but not just any sneakers! I bought the gold ones at the flagship store in Paris, in the Palais Royal. The white ones are amazing Converse x Vena Cava, that look like the feathers and stripes were drawn on."

"Leopard print is a wardrobe staple for me — it goes with everything and is perfect for every occasion. The shoes were a must-have after I fell in love with them on The Man Repeller. Lynda and I 'man repel' on a daily basis at the office; brogues, harem pants, and Marni dresses! The bag is so unique because of the horizontal quilting. It’s always nice to have something a little different."

"This 1960s dress came right out of a client's closet in Miami beach, unused and fabulous. The color is so shocking that even pink haters can't help but love it. The Lawrence Weiner word installation is cryptic and clever, just like him."
