Athena Calderone Lets Us Into Her BK Pad & Closet

The folks over at The Coveteur love playing to our voyeuristic side, and each week, the OG closet invaders will let us peek into the designer-laden digs of their — and our! — favorite tastemakers. Just one warning: The lust-worthy displays may cause an undying impulse to hang your jewels on your kitchen sink’s faucet. Now, let the swooning begin!
Athena Calderone is the girl you can’t help but (you know how much we hate saying this word, but) crush on: Those heavy jet-black bangs, bright red lip (it’s Ruby Woo, F.Y.I.), innate style and an eye for anything beautiful. Say what you what about the chameleonic creative creature, but she waves her magical wand at anything and it’s an instant success.

We caught up with Calderone at her Dumbo abode and, as you can imagine, we immediately swooned and then asked when we could move in. Every inch of her home has that signature A.C.-touch — that so wrong, but so right vibe. “I love combining polarizing qualities — using elements that seem like they shouldn’t work, but do — because I think it creates a tension that brings intrigue and curiosity to a space.”
When it comes to style, Calderone is basically the Barbie we never had… but always wanted. We danced through her closet, pulling out red crystal Dolce & Gabbana boots that were made for Madonna and plenty of Alejandro Ingelmo. (“It’s the only sneaker my husband wears, my son just got his first pair and he [Ingelmo] named a shoe after me, which was a massive honor called, ‘The Athena!’”) After chatting about Cov-alums Jenné Lombardo and Jennifer Fisher and our mutual love for Montauk (they have a picture-perfect home in Amagansett), we dressed her up in a series of looks — think: a very Carrie Bradshaw Giambattista Valli dress, that Suno cut-out floral number and a side of Miu Miu and Marant. As passerbys gazed on, Calderone stood on the edge for what may have been one of our most-dangerous-don’t-try-this-at-home pictures; we (minus Jake) covered our eyes the entire time. All in the name of a photo, right?

"If my shoes could talk they'd say, 'You do me proud, lady!' I am having a love affair with my peachy colored Alejandro Ingelmo sandals — so chic and graphic! My entire family loves and wears Alejandro Ingelmo shoes (actually it’s the only sneaker my husband wears and my son just got his first pair!). Alejandro is a friend and named a shoe after me which was a massive honor! 'The Athena.'" All: Various Designers

"I suppose for years I felt embarrassed by all my creative ramblings and often felt fragmented. Through Eye-Swoon all those bits of myself found a home and a voice. So I guess my advise is dip your toes in all that you love and all that you can because LIFE is a training for 'who know’s what.' I could have never dreamt up Eye-Swoon five years ago and now I can’t imagine Eye-Swoon without all those separate parts of myself."

"My first ever designer splurge was a Dolce & Gabbana pencil skirt, silk and wine colored. It was a very big deal and I wore it far too many times... that was probably 1997 or 1998. I recently pulled it out again and have begun wearing it! I will also never forget the first time I spent over $100 for a pair of shoes when I first moved to NYC. I specifically recall at 19 gawking at my older friends that spent so much on shoes and thinking, 'I just can’t understand paying that price for shoes!' Now I can’t get enough! My husband is a massive heel lover so buying a new pair far too regularly benefits us both… hehe!" Shoes: Saint Laurent

"I think design should never strike just one note. I love combining polarizing qualities, using elements that seem like they shouldn’t work, but do. I think it creates a tension that brings intrigue and curiosity to a space. So, a clean environment with eclectic oddities, luxurious textures next to raw ones, old pieces with new ones; that’s what gives a room character and depth. I tend to be a little schizophrenic in everything I do. One day I want to feel like a hippie in a rustic flea market, the next day I want to feel lush and sophisticated. It’s obvious in the way I dress from day to day, and in my homes." Jacket: Vintage Lee; Bags: Rebecca Minkoff; Hat: rag & bone

"I would have to say designing my own mid-century modern modernist beach house in Amagansett was the highlight of my career. It was the first house I ever did (as opposed to an apartment or retail space) and I really pushed myself creatively to use raw and organic materials and juxtapose the modern architecture with antique and eclectic oddities. I suppose I feel incredibly proud of that home. It single handedly transformed mine and my families life, bringing us closer to nature, surfing, eachother, while also being the catalyst that defiined my career in interiors." "For clothing I love Isabel Marant, Acne, Chloé, Céline, Alexander Wang, SUNO, Saint Laurant, and 3.1 Phillip Lim. I am fairly obsessed with [the boutique] Zoe in my neighborhood in Dumbo [Brooklyn]. They have an incredible selection of all the designers I love and know all the girls in the shop. They always look out for me and tell my husband what I want for Christmas and birthdays."

"The crystal red boots are Dolce & Gabanna and were made for Madonna for her Ray Of Light tour. My husband did the music for both Madonna at the time and for Dolce & Gabbana. Stefano [Gabbana] & Domenico [Dolce] were our friends at the time so I somehow received the extra pair of boots from the tour!" Boots: Dolce & Gabbana; Bag: Vintage

"A year and a half ago, after a summer at the beach, I found myself between design projects. I felt a lull in creativity and I started Eye-Swoon as the answer to that lull. I love making things beautiful, whether it’s my immediate physical environment or the food that I create, and I wanted to share those little sparks of inspiration and see what journeys they would inspire for others." "This dress is hands down my most swoon-worthy and adored piece of clothing. It was traded between myself and a girlfriend, she got a beaded coat and I got this stunning pale blushy pink pleated pieces of perfection. It's so delicate, feminine, sexy, and vintage all at once — a great representation of me!" Shoes: Alejandro Ingelmo; Dress: Vintage Balenciaga

"Acting was a wonderful way for me to create, express myself, and learn a ton about myself, but I was miserable. Method acting was very unhealthy for me and while I had everything in life to be happy about, I was quite unhappy, always outside myself watching, and not feeling present. Digging up all of your emotional past on a daily basis proved to weigh heavily on me. When I got pregnant and had my son, I was filled with such love and joy that I couldn’t imagine going back to that world."
