With his girlfriend moving in, Erik wanted to revamp his Chicago bachelor pad to better suit both of their taste preferences. The couple hired interior design startup Homepolish to make their downtown loft feel more cohesive and comfortable for both lounging and entertaining. Their designer Guinevere Johnson helped make the space more grown up, a bit more feminine, and overall much more inviting for Alex's move in. Tour the space and see the transformation, ahead.

Having lived here with his brother for three years before Alex moved in, the apartment was — for all intents and purposes — a bachelor pad. With the help of their designer Guinevere, the space was totally transformed. "The walls were plain white drywall and they had really dark, bulky furniture that soaked up all the light in the space. What you see in the living room and bathroom now is completely new," Guinevere says.

"We used Ann Sack's Network tile on the fireplace wall to add texture that works well with the smooth, light living room," Guinevere says.

For the shower walls, Guinevere "chose not to offset the Carrara tile, but to lay it out in a grid. This made it much more urban and contemporary, and befits the downtown loft. I literally laid out each piece of tile myself, with the help of Alex. We created a painting out of the movement in the Carrara. It was harder, but worth it!"

Because Alex and Erik wanted an interesting media wall, Guinevere made sure to plan the living room layout and furniture accordingly. "The current floor plan is ideal for entertaining or just lounging on a Sunday, which was their main goal," the designer says.

The eye-catching light fixture above the dining area is the perfect balancing element to the fireplace wall tiles.

It's tough to feel much nostalgia for the former bachelor pad based on the look and feel of this smart, polished loft.
