I have spent the better part of 20 years learning how to tame my curly mane, so I like to think that I know a thing or two about getting frizz-free waves that aren’t stiff or crunchy. Managing curls while growing up in Massachusetts was one thing, but living in D.C. and being subjected to its wicked humidity has kept me mixing and remixing my hair product cocktails.
I have probably tried every curl crème, spray gel, and salt spray on the market to find a combination of products that I can rely on. And after years of coercing, pulling, straightening, and begging, I think I finally found a system that works for me when I want to ditch the hot tools and let my wild waves roam frizz-free. See my perfect hair cocktail for natural curls that can withstand any humidity.

The perfect curl starts in the shower. If I don’t use the right shampoo and conditioner to prep my hair, I won’t get nearly the lift and hold that I‘m after. I love Kinky Curly’s Come Clean Shampoo because it (gently) rids my head of any buildup that can weigh down curls and waves. I follow up with Phyto’s super lightweight conditioner. It detangles and moisturizes, but rinses out completely.
Once out of the shower, I flip my head, run Cricket's Ultra Smooth Argan & Olive Oil Conditioning Comb through, and wrap everything up in a microfiber hair turban, which dries my hair as I put on my makeup and get dressed.
After taking my hair down from the towel, I don’t touch or comb it. I immediately apply product and start scrunching. I have been alternating between a salt spray and a spray gel, because I have found that too much salt spray can really dry things out.
I love spray products in general because they don’t have to be raked through the hair, which can stretch and flatten out natural curls. Just spritz directly into your hair, then gently scrunch.
And now for the hardest, yet most crucial step: When the process is done, try not to touch your hair until it’s 100% dry. This helps make sure your spirals are soft and shapely.
