I'm always running to shoots or Instagram-ing my arm candy, so long-lasting manicures are a must for me. To ensure that my polish lasts for as long as possible, I've perfected an at-home mani routine, which has become my favorite beauty ritual.
First, I always paint my nails right before bed, so that my nighttime routine doesn’t mess them up. That means I brush my teeth, wash my face, and apply my Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair (the holy grail for dry patches) and Mario Badescu Glycolic Eye Cream. Then, I turn on reruns of my TV obsession of the moment (Mad Men, what else?), and hop into bed with my mani kit and a magazine for my makeshift table — ultra-thick Vogues are particularly sturdy.
The reason why so many manicures don't last is because of two words: no patience. I have zero when it comes to sitting still, so it's essential that I paint my nails while I have something to distract myself — that's where Netflix comes into play. First, I apply my base coat and allow it to completely dry while I watch Megan's awkward serenade to Don Draper singing, "Zou bisou bisou..." Makes me cringe every time.
When I begin applying my color, I try to paint as thin of a coat as possible. Globby polish is prone to chipping, so make sure to slow down, enjoy the show, and paint those layers slowly and carefully. My current favorite polish is Revlon ColorStay™ Longwear Nail Enamel in Spanish Moss. It's a safari green that's neutral enough to match anything. Plus, this polish truly is "long-wearing" as mine doesn't chip for a good week and a half — that is, if you follow my tips.
I always apply two coats of color, and then a topcoat. You must wait for each layer to dry for your polish to really last. So my advice: The longer you stretch out the wait time, the better. The topcoat is also so essential to not only protect your color, but add shine. And that’s it! I’m telling you, this ritual works for a chip-proof, at-home manicure. The next time you’re doing a nail sesh, cue up your Netflix.
