The Braided Hairstyle You Can Actually Pull Off (Promise!)

While many usher in summer with dining al fresco, hitting the beach, or catching concerts in the park, some of us aren’t as welcoming, like me. Summer to me is the time of the year when I’m most uncomfortable. I'm sweating from every gland imaginable, causing my hair to stick to my face and neck. As a result, I'm constantly throwing it up into a ponytail or some sort of makeshift bun — practical, but so tired.
But, the runway looks are here to inspire as always with intricate braids sweeping the shows from Rodarte to Badgley Mischka. So to keep your strands off of your clammy neck and still look pulled together during the inferno that is summer, I chatted with Jenny Balding of Cutler Salons to get the romantic braided updo that's my personal fave.

Step 1: Start with day-old hair and divide hair into three sections: front, crown, and back.
Step 2: French braid the entire crown section starting with the left ear and braiding toward the right ear, then secure the braid with an elastic.
Step 3: Braid the front section, start with the left ear and work your way across until you get behind the right ear. Once the front braid has reached the right side, connect with the crown braid, making sure to braid right down to the very tip.
Step 4: Wrap the braids going from left to right, clockwise around your crown and pin.
Step 5: Braid the bottom section straight down in a regular braid, twist it up and lay it flat across the back of your head and pin with bobby pins. The more disheveled the braids, the better they look.
