3 Killer Updos To Prevent The Hair-On-Neck Situation

For New Yorkers, summer means sunny days in the park, the return of shorts, streetside mango vendors, and humidity — lots of it. I grew up in Miami, which is essentially the same as growing up inside a sauna. My adolescence was basically made up of one frizzy-haired disaster after the other. I've since learned that on humid days, the best thing to do is throw all your hair up.
So, while I love my topknot as much as the next girl, I thought I'd mix things up a bit and try out these three super chic updos. They'll keep your hair off your neck and stay sleek even in the city's 90% humidity. Bring it on, NYC.

The Zigzag Ponytail
Step 1: Create a zigzag part from the front of your hairline that extends to the middle of your scalp, using a rattail comb. This is best on unwashed hair.
Step 2: Apply a mattifying gel to slick back your hair.
Step 3: Comb your hair back into a tight low ponytail for a sleek summer 'do.

The Braided Updo
Step 1: Use a rattail comb to create a center part.
Step 2: Create two French braids on either side of your head starting from the front of your scalp and working your way back. Tie the ends with elastics.
Step 3: Wrap one of the braids back into a low bun. Use bobby pins to secure your bun in place.
Step 4: Wrap the second braid around the bun you just created.
Step 5: Gently tug on the front portions of your braid to loosen up the area, creating a more tousled look.
Step 6: Spray the front and back of your head with a generous helping of hairspray.

The Extra Volume Ponytail
Step 1: Apply a dime-size of heat-protecting serum to clean wet hair and blow it dry.
Step 2: Flip the hair on your crown upside down. Spritz with hairspray, then tease the hair, using a comb. This is to create volume on just the top of your crown.
Step 3: Sweep all of your hair up into a high ponytail. Apply a lightweight mouse to smooth down any flyaways.
Step 4: Finish with a spritz of hairspray.
