Lauren Conrad's Must-Know Winter Skin Tips

While winter weather makes it fun to bundle up, sip hot cocoa, and cozy up by the fire, it does wreak havoc on one very important factor: our skin. Winter is notorious for leaving skin dry, flaky and pasty (none of which are ideal). And, with the polar vortex in full force this season, there’s no better time to do some damage control with a few of our favorite skin tips.
I asked the ladies from my one of my go-to L.A. skincare spas, Touch of Faith Aesthetics, for their best winter skincare advice. What they told me did not disappoint. Without further ado, here are three winter skin remedies that will have you glowing and hydrated in no time!
Eat Right
Winter means cold season, and when your immunity drops so does your skin’s healthy glow. Touch of Faith owner, Faith Tatro, recommends taking care of yourself internally with immunity building foods rich in vitamin E (berries), vitamin C (spinach), and zinc (nuts). “Not only will these ingredients boost your immunity but they will also give your skin the necessary nutrients to function and look great.”

Oil Up
Don't be afraid to use oils on your face! Oils get a bad rap, but the right ones can have a very beneficial healing effect on your skin internally and externally. Esthetician Anna Logan recommends using minimally processed, cold-pressed, organic oils to supplement your diet such as fish, evening primrose, black currant, or even extra virgin olive oil. These will help you heal from scars, minimize fine lines and wrinkles, and allow your skin to seal in moisture to prevent dehydration. “Whether you are oily, dry, irritated or dealing with acne, oils will benefit you tremendously.” Here’s how Anna breaks it down by skin type: For oily, acne-prone skin, use coconut oil, or grapeseed blended with essential oils like tea tree, lavender and neem. For dry skin, use jojoba, olive oil, and rose essential oil. And, for irritated or sensitive skin, use essential oils such as chamomile, calendula and jojoba.

In the winter months, skin can get especially dry and dull, which is why esthetician Amy Rae Hazelip says that it's extremely important to exfoliate the skin. “When we exfoliate, we are sloughing off old dead skin cells and we send a message to the skin to produce more collagen and bring forth our new, regenerated skin cells.” Your skin will look bright and fresh after exfoliating, and it will feel better, too. Amy recommends consulting with a skin care professional on which method of exfoliation is best for you and also how many times a week would be best for your skin.
