Umeshu Making Class With Peko Peko
We like to think of ourselves as creatures of comfort culture. Seriously, we have braved a bite of questionable eats and can totally stand our own on a banter of wits. So, when we spotted yet another well-rounded workshop on the art of making, Umeshu, we knew it was not one to miss! This delicious Japanese plum liquor, which comes from the Ume tree, is sure to be a statement addition to that home bar cart you've been curating. Go ahead and tell your friends the skill was taken up on a journey through the mountains of Japan — your secret is safe with us.
When: Sunday, June 9, 2 to 4 p.m.
Where: Peko Peko, 815 Broadway (between 8th and 9th streets); 510-575-9152.
Cost: $75; buy tickets here!
Big Gay Ice Cream Comes To San Francisco
There's nothing like a clever business name that keep us coming back, especially when it produces an even better ice cream! Traveling over from our East Coast sister city of NYC are Doug Quint and Bryan Petroff and their Big Gay Ice Cream truck. The cult ice-cream company seems so suited for our prideful city, with flavors such as Salty Pimp and Bea Arthur, it's surprising we didn't invent it ourselves. The two have made the journey to join the rest at the Chipotle Cultivate Festival, but will also be hanging around town at classic haunts, Heath Ceramics and Humphry Slocombe.
When: Saturday, June 8, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Where: Hellman Hollow, Golden Gate Park, 50 Overlook Drive (at John F. Kennedy Drive); No Phone.
Marquee Market Pop-Up
We always make sure to keep a mentality that says there's not such thing as too many clothes, but we've got to make some closet space in time to snatch up some Marquee Market gems this Sunday. With a perfect, harmonious mixture between some good ol' market classics and brand new names, you will have a hard time getting out of this event empty handed. A few mentionable attendees: Hellbent by Beth Newman, Diamond Tooth, Urgent Vintage, Darkness and Dawn, and some awesome newbies from Job & Boss and Micaela Greg. You will also have time to get your butt on the dance floor with live music by Joel Robinow.
When: Sunday, June 9, noon to 5 p.m.
Where: Marquee Salon, 420 40th Street, Unit 3 (at Webster Street), Oakland; 510-286-6679.
