Is there anything better than a three-day weekend? We think not — thank you, Memorial Day! Now comes the hard part: making the most of your (much deserved) day off and shortened work week. Well, look no further, because we've toiled away in search of five stellar things to do in our fair city, and think you'll be pleased with the results. Good luck choosing just one!
Get in Touch with Your Artsy Side At LACMA's Newest Exhibition
If you're anything like us, you get a little giddy every time LACMA announces a new exhibition. And, the newest James Turrell: A Retrospective, is no exception! It features geometric light projections, prints, drawings, installations, and holograms by the homegrown artist who was a key creator in the Southern California Light and Space movement of the 60s and 70s. This half-century-spanning retrospective promises to be a real feast for the senses.
When: On view now
Where: LACMA, 5905 Wilshire Boulevard (near South Fairfax Avenue); 323-857-6000.
Groove Out Of Your Mid-Week Blues
Here’s an awesome way to power through the mid-week slump — a concert for Portland-based band Radiation City. To make this an even greater chance to chill out, Cuckoo Chaos and Steffaloo will also be jammin’ at The Satellite Wednesday night. Just don’t blame us for your co-workers’ sideways stares when you can’t stop humming dreamily for the rest of the week!
When: Wednesday, May 29, 9 p.m. to 2 a.m.
Where: The Satellite, 1717 Silver Lake Boulevard (near West Silver Lake Drive); 323-661-4380.
Tickets: $8, purchase here.
Eat, Drink, And Be Merry At The Santa Monica Festival
If Santa Monica's pristine beaches and lively pier aren't reason enough to head to the lovely locale, perhaps some live music, dancing, and DIY art workshops will convince you? The city's 22nd annual festival arrives next Saturday and promises all that and more. From hip hop dancing and reggae music, to a chef challenge and Zumba classes, the bash has something for everyone. Plus, admission and parking are free, so slather on the SPF and hit the 10!
When: Saturday, June 1, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Where: Clover Park, 2600 Ocean Park Boulevard (near 25th Street); no phone.
Watch A Classic Film Surrounded By (Dead) Hollywood Royalty
It might seem a bit eerie, but catching a flick at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery is at the top of our summer must-do list! This weekend, Cinespa happens to be showing one of our fave classic movies, Some Like It Hot. Is there a better way to watch Marilyn Monroe tempt Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis than while sipping a little Pinot Gris under the stars? We think not. Tip: Don’t forget the cozy blankets and a yummy picnic!
When: Saturday, June 1, gates 7:30 p.m., movie 9 p.m.
Where: Hollywood Forever Cemetery, 6000 Santa Monica Boulevard (at North Van Ness Avenue); 323-221-3343.
Tickets: $12, purchase here.

Go on, enjoy the awesome music, live art, and cocktails that will be waiting for you at the venue, which will be decked out like Andy Warhol’s Silver Factory. Your apartment will thank you!
