Preetma Singh's Style Inspiration? Kurt Cobain!

Preetma Singh, Market Editor, WSJ. Magazine
When this rising, young lawyer discovered that — yeah — law wasn't really her bag, she found herself in luck. A chance meeting with our own editorial director, Christene Barberich, led to a Refinery29 internship...which led to a fashion assistant post at Vogue...which led to an associate market editor position at Marie Claire...which led to her current gig as market editor for WSJ. Magazine (and certified status as a menswear-obsessed style star with her own popular blog). The moral of the story? In fashion, you should never shy away from opportunity and always, always intern at Refinery29. We kid, we kid.
My style in six words or less:
“Try everything at least once.”
My constant source of style inspiration:
“Kurt Cobain…well…not necessarily literally (although sometimes, yes). It’s because he reminds me to balance an interest in aesthetics with being natural and not giving a shit…And also because he makes me want to wear men's clothes.”
My favorite summer accessory:
"Sunglasses. I may actually have too many! I think I have around 20! They’re just such an easy thing to start collecting. I’m not afraid to get that crazy pair you think 'I’ll never wear.' I always do, anyway!"
My first major, big-ticket style purchase:
“A Michael Kors semisheer, safari, button-up shirt I bought in high school. I definitely had to save more than a few of my paychecks from Sam Goody to get it. Think it was the Gisele influence (I had a bit of an obsession at the time).”
My favorite up-and-coming designers:
“I love Simone Rocha and all of the London scene — Chris Kane, J.W. Anderson, Roksanda Ilincic, Meadham Kirchhoff, and Jonathan Saunders — though, I’m not sure if they all still qualify as ‘up-and-coming’ anymore. Louise Goldin and Kaelen are also great.”
My definitive summer go-to outfit:
“Men’s shorts and a short-sleeve shirt or polo shirt make me feel easy and confident with a dash of attitude. As an added bonus, my boyfriend actually likes it!”
My most surprising, out-of-left-field fashion find:
“I found the most amazing, vintage '70s mink skirt with double slits up to there at a vintage store. I never knew my life was missing a mink skirt until then.”
My style theme song:
“'You Think You’re a Man’ by The Vaselines.”
