Céline Provides Unexpected Twists (Literally) For Fall '13

We sometimes view a new collection with a set of expectations (and an open mind, too, of course), and when it comes to Céline, we think of clean lines, minimalism, and at least a few new It items. But Phoebe Philo is not one to rest on her laurels, as the fall '13 debut gave us both the Céline aesthetic we love and so many unexpected twists.
Trading fuzzy slippers for fuzzy coats and lunch bags for clutches matched perfectly to its ensemble, fall '13 lets the Céline woman play around with shape and form. Silhouettes are distinct — slightly stiff, even — but contrast lovely with soft, creamy colors. And — following suit with the trend of the moment — '90s references were made so discreet and clever you may not even catch them the first time around. That slouchy sweatshirt that tied around your waist is now hidden in a heather gray dress we're obsessing. The plaid pieces that once riddled your closet? Now it's structured, bold, and lays neat and flat off your shoulders in a knee-length coat.
But these were not the only hot-ticket items. Philo gave us a collection of coats, made statement-making by their details and rich textures, as well as off-the-shoulder wraps that are ladylike but not too prim. While we can't say that our initial assumptions were completely wrong, the designs simply take what we love from the label to a new, unexpected, gotta-have-it level.
