5 Awesome Things To Do This Week In L.A.

The month is drawing to a close, and you know what that means: Paychecks will be directly deposited into bank accounts any day now. So, with that in mind, we found five events and activities we consider worthy investments. From inexpensive grub to gotta-have-'em concert tickets, the next seven days are brimming with fun ways to spend that much-deserved moola. And, if you're searching for a spot to score great threads for all these happenings, head on over to newest addition to Melrose — it'll be hard to leave empty-handed!
For One Night Only: High Times At Playa
Suddenly struck with the munchies? You're in luck! Cheech Marin will be joining chef John Sedlar at Playa for Mexi-China, a special dinner menu combining the cuisine of Mexican and Chinese cultures. Of course, Marin's appreciation for mind-altering substances will make an appearance in dishes such as potstickers, rolled spring rolls, and house-baked desserts. The delicious meal doesn't come at a high price either – just $35 a pop!
When: Tuesday, January 29, 5:30 to 10 p.m.
Where: Playa, 7360 Beverly Boulevard (at North Fuller Avenue); 323-933-5300.
One For The Books: Art-Themed Tomes On View (And Available For Purchase!)
While we love our novels and the like, nothing beats kicking back with an insanely good art book and getting lost in the inspiring content. And, if you're on the hunt for new fodder, we suggest you head to the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA this Thursday evening for the opening reception of L.A.'s premiere L.A. Art Book Fair, presented by Printed Matter. Over 220 books, art catalogs, monographs, periodicals, and zines from international presses, booksellers, antiquarians, artists, and independent publishers will be on display. Plus, featured projects include an homage to Mike Kelley presented by Gagosian and a Larry Clark Pop-Up Shop by Boo-Hooray. Trust, this event will get those creative juices flowing in a major way!
When: Thursday, January 31, 6 to 9 p.m.
Where: Geffen Contemporary at MOCA, 152 North Central Avenue (at East 1st Street); 213-626-6222.
Our Hearts Are Racing: Tegan and Sara To Play A Special Show
We've been smitten with these twin sisters since they hit the scene in the early '00s. Almost 10 years later, we're still in love with their sound — we try to scoop up concert tickets whenever they're in town. Naturally then, you'll find us at Club Nokia on Friday night, rocking out to the gals old-school sounds and new tracks like "Closer" from their seventh studio album, Heartthrob. We bet you'll be so jealous if you miss out on this performance!
When: Friday, February 1, 8 p.m.
Where: Club Nokia at L.A. Live, 800 West Olympic Boulevard (at South Figueroa Street); 213-765-7000.
