Cat Power, The xx, & More Awesome Shows This Week

Cat Power, Willis Earl Beal, Xray Eyeballs: le Baron, October 23, $39.50
Against all odds, 2012 is shaping up to be Chan Marshall’s year. Despite a very public breakup and a four-year hiatus since her last album, Cat Power has returned with Sun, her brightest and most optimistic record to date. Expect to hear new favorites, along with a career’s worth of torch songs.
Tuesday, October 23, 7 p.m., Hammerstein Ballroom, 311 West 34th Street (between 8th and 9th avenues); 212-279-7740.
The xx, Chairlift: Loews Paradise Theatre, October 26 and 28, $42
Headlining two shows on Halloween weekend seems all too appropriate for dark London threesome The xx. The band’s choice of venue is stellar, and the band should have no problem filling up space; for The xx, silence can sound bigger than most bands loudest guitars.
Friday, October 26, and Sunday, October 28, 8 p.m., Loews Paradise Theatre, 2403 Grand Concourse (between 184th and 188th streets), Bronx, NY; 718-933-3585.
The Weeknd: Loews Paradise Theatre, October 27, $39.50
Sandwiched between the two The xx shows above is the only guy who might be able to surpass them when it comes to gloomy atmosphere. The Weeknd’s Thursday show at Terminal 5 may be sold out, but a trip to the Bronx Saturday night is well worth it to nod along to Abel Tesfaye’s murky R&B.
Saturday, October 27, 8 p.m., Loews Paradise Theatre, 2403 Grand Concourse (between 184th and 188th streets), Bronx, NY; 718-933-3585.
