Your A-Plus Guide To Giving Great Face In L.A. — The Green Way!

[UPDATE: This story was originally published on October 18.]
L.A. can be a pretty inescapably toxic place — and we don't mean that socially. The city's tap water is totally off-limits and the smog can sometimes be so thick you wish you had a mask for your morning commute. That's precisely why so many Angelenos prioritize wholesome eating, drinking, and beautifying.
Plus, if you're anything like us, you apply so many products per day you don't even want to count 'em, so it seems downright silly to add even more chemicals to your already-tainted daily routine. Instead, we suggest taking a ride in this Prius of a green-beauty guide filled with L.A.'s top au naturel supply stores, products with short and sweet ingredient lists, and the most indulgent eco-friendly spa treatments. Pollution be damned, the glow you'll get from these get-pretty tips is anything but faux.
The ARCONA Studio
We swear so solemnly by this all-natural line and lineup of aestheticians that we even snooped inside founder Chanel Jenae's beauty cabinet! Located right near the Promenade in Santa Monica, you can score enzyme and oxygen treatments, LED therapy, and a slew of other beauty must-dos. And, you can bet your bottom dollar we've been using the Brightening Gommage every day to erase all that summer-sun damage (sometimes the UVBs have you beat even with SPF and a wide-brimmed hat!). We love that the seemingly innocuous and delicate mix of daisies, cranberries, and blueberries demolishes dark spots.
The ARCONA Studio, 425 Broadway Street (at 5th Street); 310-458-3800.
Arcona Brightening Gommage, $52, available at Arcona.
It's no secret that this Beverly Center spot is a mecca for enviro-friendly items of every kind, but we've only recently discovered the power of its makeup. The Mineral Tinted Broad Spectrum SPF 15 is paraben-free, portable, comes in a post-consumer recycled carton, and is the ideal light coverage for everyday occasions (a.k.a. the beauty equivalent of a bestie you never get sick of). And, once you add the refillable Professional Environmental Compact to your makeup bag (eight Eye Colors, one Dual Foundation or Pressed Powder, and one Face Accents), there's seriously not a thing more your skin could ever need!
Aveda, 131 North La Cienega Boulevard #601 (at Beverly Boulevard); 310-659-5067.
Aveda Mineral Tinted Moisture Broad Spectrum SPF 15, $28, available at Aveda.
Aveda Professional Envirometal Compact, $28, available at Aveda.
We fell for this brand back in the day when it gave us the first scent of our adolescence! And it remains one of our faves because it's green, mean, and thoroughly committed to potent products that are fueled solely from the fruits of the earth. The scientists traverse the globe to find exotic elements that span from Anogeissus (aids in age defiance) and Trehalose for hydration. Much better than 17-syllable ingredients that sound more like a disease than ease, right? Lastly, if you're sensitive, this is the mascara we swear by — it's gel and easy on the eyes, literally and figuratively!
Origins, 10250 Santa Monica Boulevard (at Avenue of the Stars); 310-772-0272.
Origins Full Story Mascara, $15, available at Origins.
rA Organic Spa
Using all organic oils and herbs, this Burbank bliss factory is the bee's knees. If you ask us, the Fruit and Creme Bath is the best way to start a Saturday, with real bits of produce floating in the tub! Plus, it's one of the only brick-and-mortar vendors that carry Éminence, one of our all-time top organic brands (Olivia Wilde, Jessica Biel, and Courtney Cox swear by it, too!). The Tropical Vanilla Sun Cream smells so yummy that we lather it on even if we don't need a sun shield!
rA Organic Spa, 119 North Fernando Boulevard (near East Olive Avenue); 818-848-4772.
Eminence Tropical Vanilla Sun Cream, $68, available at Dermstore.

Green Line Beauty, 7123 Melrose (at Santa Monica Boulevard); 323-933-5369.
Josie Maran Argan Oil
As an actress and supermodel, Hollywood regular Josie Maran knows a thing or two about getting glam. Luckily for us, she's channeled that know-how into her eponymous and eco-friendly line of beauty products that deliver the gorge! One of our faves is the Argan Oil: Organically grown in Morocco, this serum can cure just about anything. From dry skin to flakey cuticles and even nasty split ends, this tiny bottle is tops. And, we're ultra appreciative of the fact that we can pick it up at any local Sephora store! The retailer sells tons of organic products in addition to Maran, including Alterna.
Josie Maran Argan Oil, $48, available at Sephora.
We have yet to meet a Fresh product we didn't like. So, every single time we step foot in the Century City outpost, we instantly spot at least a handful of items that need to come home with us. The co-founders originally made soaps, but quickly expanded into other skin care and beauty essentials, such as the ever popular Brown Sugar Body Polish. In addition to that exfoliant, we're bona fide junkies when it comes to Fresh's Rose Cleaning Foam. It removes all of the gunk that sticks to your face without drying it out entirely. Plus, it smells divine!
Fresh, 10250 Santa Monica Boulevard (near Century Park West); 310-552-0798.
Fresh Rose Cleansing Foam, $38, available at Fresh.
Ditch the run-of-the-mill spa sesh and head on over to Jurlique where these experts take pampering very personally. Is your teen acne back or are you worried about wrinkles? These folks know the ins and outs of TLC and will cater their treatments to your every need. Botanically based and blissful, we suggest you book your appointment way in advance. We guarantee you'll leave the spa glowing if you sign up for a facial, or at the very least pick up some goodies like the sweet-smelling Jasmine Shower Gel.
Jurlique, 1230 Montana Avenue (between Euclid and 12th street); 310-899-1923.
Jurlique Jasmine Shower Gel, $22, available at Jurlique.
Alicia Silverstone for Juice Beauty
The Clueless star is practically Tinseltown's poster child for going green. The new L.A. mama is known for (and often promotes) her health-conscious lifestyle, including a strict vegan diet and earth-friendly autos. We've already added her cook book to our kitchen, and now we're bringing her expertise to the bathroom. With packaging made with over 90% recycled materials and printed with soy ink, the actress' line of makeup and moisturizer is not only good for Mother Earth, but great on our wallets. Each item is made with certified organic ingredients and antioxidants, and you can read up on all of the ingredients at Juice Beauty. If there's anything we love more than eco-friendly products in pretty packaging, it's those same products with a slim price tag!
Alicia Silverstone for Juice Beauty Purely Kissable Lip Color, $16, available at Juice Beauty.

With all of the customizable scent shops in L.A., it's very easy to get overwhelmed by all the patchouli, lavender, and musk. But, we're not about to give up and hit the department store counter just yet! Instead, we pay Persephenie a visit and all of our troubles seem to melt away. At the artist studio-slash-boutique in WeHo, Persephenie works her magic crafting one-of-a-kind scents and building jewelry for her loyal customers. We suggest you join the aromatherapist for a class, or stop by for tailored perfume — either way you'll walk away smelling sublime!
Persephenie, 304 South Edinburgh Avenue (at West 3rd Street); 323-658-7507.
The Raven Spa
Whether you're an East or Westsider, there's no excuse for missing out on Raven Spa's heavenly amenities. With locations in Silver Lake and Santa Monica, this oasis offers up loads of stress-relieving treatments with an eco-conscious edge. The traditional Thai massages are what dreams are made of, and the burning sage helps ease your mind while the masseuse works out those knots. We're addicted to the Indian Ayurvedic Facial, which involves organic herbs, essential oils, natural fruits, and minerals. If you're in the mood for serious me-time, you need to give these guys a ring!
The Raven Spa, 2910 Rowena Avenue (near Herkimer Street); 323-644-0240.
Beverly Hills Juice
The running joke around the R29 office is that the Apple Lemon Double Ginger juice is the spinach that turns us all into Popeye. Not only does it provide us with an insane amount of energy, but when we're feeling under the weather, it's the next best thing after a warm bowl of chicken noodle soup. Stock up on bottles on Beverly, or visit the booth at the Santa Monica Farmers' Market. Pressed and unpasteurized, we can't think of a better beverage than the Banana Manna shakes!

Santa Maria Novella
This spot's the sneaky secret behind the many chic girls we know who are so not granola! Because the Melrose Place staple's products are 800 years old (Catherine de' Medici wore the pharmacy's citrus and bergamot scented water), almost everything they blend is all-natural. It's akin to farm-to-table fare — the brand cultivates its own fields in Florence and even still handcrafts the body, home, and face finery. And, you haven't lived unless you've sniffed the vibrant Pot Pourri!
Santa Maria Novella, 8411 Melrose Place (near North Croft Avenue); 323-651-3754.
El León Spa
We gave a shout-out to this Mid-City spot in our best massages roundup, and an indulgent weekend always calls for one of its Hawaiian Hot Stone sessions. Its philosophy is "If you can't eat it, don't put it on your face" — meaning you'll get doused in a healthy dose of anything from chamomile and pomegranate to primrose oil and green apple peel. We always envision a culinary-star kitchen in the back, where they cook up all of their miracle cures!
El León Spa, 8217 Beverly Boulevard (between North Harper and North La Jolla avenues); 323-782-9582.
The Broot
This is breaking news, folks! The Broot's the first all-natural hair-mask bar, and believe us when we say, it's something every set of tresses should try! Samira Asemanfar was one of those girls who dared to bring the fridge to her beauty regimen, and over the years realized what a headache and mess it all was. So, she set out to simplify the process for everyone and just opened up her doors for moisturizing, scalp therapy, and overall hair repair suited to you with avocado, mango, banana, honey, olive oil, and so many more things used that we also want to eat! Another reason we're so keen on this green joint? They'll put your hair in a pretty bun or braid before you leave!
The Broot, 1626 Montana Avenue (near 17th Street); 310-230-5317.
