Ellie Goulding Talks Pink Hair, Sandro, & Her Own Clothing Line

Ellie Goulding’s sophomore album, Halcyon, just dropped, and we're sure that fans of the London songstress won’t be disappointed. Over the past few years, Goulding has made a name for herself as a singer-songwriter able to move from hushed and heartfelt ballads to EDM bangers without breaking a sweat. (Just look at her collabs with beau, Skrillex, for proof of the latter.) In her short time in the public eye, she’s won a Brits Critics' Choice Award and even performed at Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding reception.
And, her fortes go well beyond the music realm: Goulding also shines as a fashion icon, making her presence felt at fashion weeks and on the red carpets across the world. We caught up with the multifaceted, multitalented singer to talk about her new album, rocking her inminitable style, and her future in fashion.
Who were your favorite musicians going up?
“Björk and Pearl Jam. I would sing along to all pop music. I love Beyoncé. I love big, powerful voices.”
What inspires your music these days?
“Spending time in the countryside and places where I grew up.”
What can we expect from Halcyon? How was writing and recording it different from Lights?
“It's more mature. It's more soulful, and less 'dance-y.' But, I'm sure there will be plenty of remixes, so I'll look forward to that. I'm so excited about my record. I've been writing it for about two years.... I travelled on my own to Ireland with just my guitar and spent some time in a beautiful, picturesque little village by the sea, writing songs for the new album. It's a very mythical, peaceful place. I have a song called "Halcyon" — I like the idea of places of paradise and happiness and wanted to reflect that.”
How would you describe your personal style?
“Grunge. I love pink! My hair is pink.”
What are your favorite places to shop in NYC, London, or elsewhere?
“Sandro and Urban Outfitters. When I am home, I love driving my new car to Westfield's & going shopping.”
You've been a Fashion Week staple in the past; what were your favorite collections from this year? Who are your favorite designers?
“Burberry, Alexander Wang, and Acne. I think fashion is so important; music and fashion are always changing and moving forward.”
You've talked about wanting to design your own clothes in the past — what could we expect from an Ellie Goulding clothing line?
“Lots of leather...”
Do you have a favorite city to play?
“Everywhere is different. I love to experience new things. I try and embrace everything I do. I would be so happy if I had time to do touristy things. I'm in Paris at the moment and wish I had the time to go shopping, and go to bars, drink wine, and eat cheese.”
What was your favorite show you've played recently?
“Berlin Live. It's a show for German television, similar to Jools Holland in the U.K. The venue was this incredible, derelict power station, and my band and I were able to play/showcase my new album.”
What's the rest of the year looking like for you?
“I'm hoping it's going to be show crazy next year! Tours and festivals...I'm so excited, and there are so many places I want to play. Having crowds singing along with my music is quite special.”
