When J.Crew took on Madison Avenue two years ago, critics were skeptical. Were Upper-East-Siders really going to dish out the dinero for clothes the same price as Gucci? If you've been keeping up with the retail behemoth, you know that the answer is a resounding yes—the great experiment that was the J.Crew Collection store ended up being an unequivocal success. Well, the 'Crew is hoping to repeat their hit for the second time, with today's opening of their J.Crew Men's Shop at Madison Avenue and 79th Street. This is the fourth location of its boys-only club, and it offers up the same mash-up of affordable and aspirational that seems to be working so well—there's edited collections of their staples (denim, shirting, outerwear), paired with an extensive suit shop that sells everything from tuxedos to a new Cashmere two-button Ludlow suit exclusive to the location. Speaking of exclusives, the boutique is the only place to find vintage Levis, Crockett & Jones shoes, Swaine Adeney Brigg leather goods, and D.R. Harris & CO. LTD. toiletries, all of which will be like catnip to former boarding-school boys. Look for more of their In Company partner collabs (Timex, Jack Purcell, Ray-Ban), as well as the building's original bank vault, which houses bags, vintage, and shoes. Plus, the décor doesn't disappoint: the knotty pine planks, detailed moldings, and old-school stainless steel globe lights were inspired by 400-year-old farms in the Swiss Alps. Tom Ford, Ralph Lauren, Hermès—you nervous yet?
