Copy These Easy Smoky Eyes & You'll Actually Arrive On Time Tonight

For a makeup technique that really only requires basic skills in blending, smoky eyes are so damn intimidating. There's something about the lack of rules that makes the look incredibly hard to master. How much product is too much? How long do I have to blend to hit the sweet spot? These are the questions we grapple with as we attempt to create the bedroom eyes of our dreams.
That's why we created a handful of smoky eye tutorials that anyone can do. The best part? Some of 'em require as little as two products. Check them out in the slides ahead.

The Trick: Black Liner Is Your BFF

Step 1. Apply black, creamy liner along the top lid and buff with a small shadow brush. This is your base. Then, top with a light dusting of black shadow.

Step 2. Apply liner under the lashline, making sure to keep it light and soft. Leave the waterline bare, which will keep the eyes looking bright and wide-open.

Step 3. Use a small, clean brush to blend the liner into the lashes and soften any edges on the top lids.

Step 4. Apply mascara to the top and bottom lashes.

The Trick: Experiment With Color

Step 1. To minimize creasing and fall out, start by priming your eyelids (we love Urban Decay's Primer Potion).

Step 2. Buff a matte purple shadow across your lids.

Step 3. For extra intensity, layer an iridescent purple shadow over the matte.

Step 4. Then blend a lighter shade of shimmery purple shadow into the center to brighten the look.

Step 5. Smudge purple eyeliner along your upper and lower lashlines.

Step 6. Top off the look with a few coats of mascara.
