5 Classy (& SEXY) Burlesque Moves

Photographed by Aaron Richter.
When burlesque began, it was all about spoofing Shakespeare and showing off ladies' scandalous ankles; needless to say, it's come a LONG way. Innovators like Dita Von Teese have brought this old-school art back into the conversation — and it's a fun way to shake up your sex and fitness routines. Corvette Le Face is a New York-based burlesque dancer who has strutted her stuff from Paris to Queens and everywhere in between. Drawing from The Burlesque Handbook by New York School of Burlesque headmistress Jo Weldon, Corvette brings a modern twist to traditional burlesque. We asked her to teach us six simple (but seductive) moves — read ahead for a lesson in sexy.

1. The Bra-To-Tassel Trick

Burlesque is all about fun, playful teasing. First, choose an ensemble that makes you feel fabulous; then, gesture towards your "goods" — clueing your partner in to your seductive intentions.

...pull off the bra, revealing a sparkly pair of tasseled pasties (or nothing at all)!

If you did spring for the pasties, here's where you get to shake 'em. To get a nice spin going, hold your arms out to the sides and shimmy. Corvette insists tassel twirling is not as hard as it seems, so just let gravity do the work!

2. The Glove Peel

Another classic burlesque move. Corvette says a good glove peel can and should be as scintillating as taking off your bra.

3. The Always-Sexy Stocking Roll

Slowly lean down as you outstretch your leg and slip off your shoe.

...but don't totally remove your stocking just yet. Instead, keep it hooked on your toes and stretch the end upwards. Corvette likes to "create tension with the stocking before snapping it off, adding a little extra tease!"

4. The Classic "Bump & Grind"

Corvette loves this one — it's considered one of the most essential burlesque moves and should therefore be a staple in every dancer's repertoire. Start with your legs spread apart. "Bump" your hips to left, then to the right, and finally, "grind" your hips by rotating them in a circular motion. Feel free to get creative with your arms!

5. The Hair Flip

Reach down to touch your ankle; then, slowly bring your arms up past your knees and chest. Now, flip! Corvette says the hair flip was a favorite of icons such as Tempest Storm and other dancers from burlesque's golden age.
