I Tried 37 Different Makeup Trends — & Here's What They All Looked Like

Last year, I had a bit of a revelation. I looked at my makeup stash and saw dozens of nearly identical products — an avalanche of neutral palettes, hoards of black eyeliner, 30+ red lipsticks. That may sound like a treasure trove to some, but it left me feeling uninspired. It was the same as looking into the closet and feeling like you have absolutely nothing to wear despite 16 dresses suggesting otherwise.

So I decided to "spring clean" my makeup wardrobe and encourage myself to use products and techniques I would have otherwise shied away from. I committed to trying 37 different trends over a two-month period — and it gave me a reason to use the bright orange, blue, and pink shadows that hadn't gotten any love before.

And guess what? I don't see myself stopping anytime soon. Ahead, see all the looks I whipped up.

This Eye-Makeup Trend Is Going To Be Huge & It's SO Easy To Copy

Over fashion week, I challenged myself to try a new trend every day — some tame (glossy eyes or two-toned lips) and others wild (graphic eyes and thumbprint liner). Check out this video to see each trend in action.
The Trend: Burnt Orange

Burnt orange makeup might be my favorite trend of the year. Stars like Olivia Munn, Emily Ratajkowski, and Joan Smalls have all worn the hue on the red carpet. To get the look, I mixed Anastasia Beverly Hills Burnt Orange matte shadow with various orangey hues from ColourPop's new pressed shadow line. Then, I topped it off with a layer of Em Cosmetic's Lip Cloud in Faded Clementine.

The Trend: Glitter Undereyes

Didn't get the recommended eight hours of shut-eye last night and it's showing on your face? Dot on a bunch of glitter flecks to cover up your bags, of course. I tapped a bit of Ardell lash glue onto my undereyes, then randomly placed Make Up For Ever Glitter on top.

The Trend: Color-Blocked Liner

Why stick to a boring old cat-eye when you can create a color-blocked masterpiece? This look, which I was pretty proud to have mastered, featured L'Oréal's Infallible Paints Eyeliners in Vivid Aqua and Black Party (see 'em in action here).

The Trend: Black Lipstick

After looking at countless photos of Rihanna rocking black lipstick like a total badass, I finally decided to paint on a layer of MAC's Liptensity lipstick in Stallion (see the shade in action here) and wear it out at night. Just like that, I'm a black lipstick convert.
MAC Cosmetics Liptensity Lipstick, $21.00 Buy
The Trend: Colored Mascara

I have short, dark eyelashes, which makes applying colored mascara difficult. After brushing on approximately 10 coats of Marc Jacob's O!Mega Mascara in Peacock, I went to my friend's birthday dinner. I loved the vibe (I was going for cotton candy), but all that mascara weighed down my lids.

The Trend: Red & Blue

If you need proof that red lips and blue eyes are the coolest colors to pair right now, look no further than Beyoncé and Shay Mitchell. Best of all, the look was super-easy to do; I just lined my waterline with this blue liner and swiped on a layer of matte red lipstick.

The Trend: Dotted Liner

Dotted liner is one of the easiest ways to make your eyes appear wider and rounder in five seconds, flat. All I did here was grab a liquid liner (I used Flirt Cosmetic's Dot, Dot, Dot Dual-Ended Eyeliner which features a unique spherical tip) and dot the color right under my iris.

The Trend: Pointillism

The next day, I was feelin' a little more dot work, so I added an extra one at the end of my cat-eye.

The Trend: White Liner

I swapped out my go-to black cat-eye for some white gel liner (Make Up For Ever Aqua XL) and somehow felt way more futuristic.

The Trend: Blue Smoky Eye

I got my hands on Pat McGrath's Dark Star kit last month and it didn't disappoint. Using the eye kit, I buffed on layer after layer of blue shadow and wound up with a deep, winged-out smoky eye. I topped it off with some clear gloss and a coat of her Lust lipstick in Blood 1.

The Trend: Cut Crease

I did my makeup with YouTuber-turned-entrepreneur Michelle Phan and she taught me how to do a simple cut crease using just black eyeliner.
Em Cosmetics Felt Tip Illustrative Eyeliner, $15.00 Buy
The Trend: Double Liner

This was a rushed morning, so I stuck to a layer of blue liner traced on top of my daily cat-eye.
L'Oréal Infallible Paints Eyeliner, $9.99 Buy
The Trend: Glitter Freckles

Right before my first-ever music festival, I tried glitter freckles for the first time. Essentially, these are flash tats made for the face that come in a variety of different shapes. I loved them so much, I wore them all weekend at Governor's Ball and again at work the next week.

The Trend: Drippy Lip

The thought of putting on so much lip gloss that it begins to drip off doesn't sound remotely appealing, but makeup artists on Instagram (chiefly Vladda Haggerty) have made the technique a trend. I tried it out by layering on six coats of Huda Beauty's Lip Strobe Then I removed it immediately, mainly because I didn't want gloss to drip all over my white pants.
Huda Beauty Lip Strobe, $18.00 Buy
The Trend: Inner Corner Color

Inspired by a makeup look from this photo series, I decided to recreate a more subdued version of sunset eyes by tapping a bit of pink shadow onto the inner corners of my eyes. Sure, the look was subtle, but it was just the touch of color I needed that day.
NARS Dual-Intensity Eyeshadow, $29.00 Buy
The Trend: Gloss

Gloss has made quite a comeback this year but I've always been hesitant to reach for it over matte, long-wear lipsticks. Nevertheless, I tried a tube of Bite's Prismatic Pearl Créme Lip Gloss in the shade Oyster Pearl and you know what? I dug it. The texture was non-sticky, hydrating, and left a thin veil of color that brightened up my face without looking too over the top.
Bite Beauty Prismatic Pearl Crème Lip Gloss, $22.00 Buy
The Trend: Glitter Brows

Glitter brows are a trend I'll never understand, because glitter is so much more fun to put pretty much anywhere else. Still, I tried it, and I'll admit I didn't completely hate it. I used Blink's new Brow Glitter that deposited just the right amount of color and was insanely easy to remove.
Blink Brow Glitter, $17.00 Buy
The Trend: Graphic Eye

This graphic eye look pushed me to try out a liner shape I'd never attempted before. After winging out blue cream shadow (I used this one), I used a red eyeliner pencil to gently trace around the existing base.
Marc Jacobs Beauty Highliner Gel Eye Crayon Eyeliner, $25.00 Buy
The Trend: Glitter Shadow

In the past, I would have avoided overly glittery eyeshadow, but in the name of trying new things, I put Stila's Magnificent Metals glitter shadows to the test. I used the shade Violet Vixen to create a winged-out shadow look.
Stila Magnificent Metals Glitter & Glow Liquid Eye Shadow in Violet Vixen, $24.00 Buy
The Trend: Insta Brows

Last month, my co-worker and I attempted "Instagram brows" using three brow products and a layer of concealer around our arches to further emphasize them.
Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz, $21.00 Buy
The Trend: Monochromatic Pink

Is it just me or does the pink makeup trend just keep getting better and better? First, it was a few layers of pink shadow, then it was pink lipstick, and now it's full-on monochromatic pink — I'm loving it. Here, I used ColourPop's Pressed Shadows in Poodle, Fair Play, and Soft Core paired with Em Cosmetic's Lip Cloud in Muted Mauve.
ColourPop Pressed Powder Eyeshadow in Poodle, $5.00 Buy
The Trend: Nipple Lipstick

Last month, a doctor claimed that the best way to find your perfect nude lipstick is to study your nipples. The beauty team tried it, and I wound up with this. Jury's still out on whether it's truly the most flattering for me.
Em Cosmetics Infinite Lip Cloud in French Nude, $16.00 Buy
The Trend: Glitter Tears

Glitter tears were a thing back in March — as in, little syringes full of silicone glitter in 3D shapes that adhere to your face. I used Dermaflage 3D Glitter Makeup and while I can't say I'd wear this daily, I'll keep it around for Halloween.
Dermaflage Dimension-3D Glitter, $24.00 Buy
The Trend: Pastel Eyes

Pastel eyeshadow is a trend I'd wear over over and over again. Why? All it takes is a layer of color (I used L'Oréal's Infallible Paints Eyeshadow in BRB Blue) to look instantly put together.
L'Oréal Infallible Paints Eyeshadow, $8.99 Buy
The Trend: Rainbow-Brite

This day, I just wanted to etch a rainbow onto my eyes. Sadly, I only had room for three colors (pink, marigold, and teal), but I loved the effect nonetheless.
Make Up For Ever Aqua XL Color Paint Shadow, $25.00 Buy
The Trend: Makeup Stamps

I've loved Milk Makeup's Face Stamps since they launched over a year ago, so you can imagine my excitement when I started seeing them all over Instagram. Here, I went for a simple three-star triangle to jazz up an otherwise simple makeup look.
Milk Makeup Tattoo Stamp, $12.00 Buy
The Trend: Sunset Eyes

Over the past few months, we've seen a combination of sunset-themed shades etched onto the lids of dozens of models and bloggers. I whipped out my Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance Palette and paired it with a pink cream eyeliner by Tarte to get the look.
Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance Eye Shadow Palette, $42.00 Buy
The Trend: Two-Toned Eyes

Hollywood's two-toned eye trend was the inspiration behind this Ziggy Stardust-meets-cotton-candy creation.
Lancôme Ombre Hypnôse Stylo Shadow Stick Matte Metallics, $25.00 Buy
The Trend: Unicorn Makeup

Duo-chrome, unicorn-inspired eyeshadow (see it in action here) is a much more wearable alternative to trendy unicorn highlighters.
Stila Glitter & Glow Liquid Eye Shadow, $24.00 Buy
The Trend: Popsicle Lips

Ombré lips, also known as "popsicle" lips, take the concept of contouring and apply it to the mouth. By tapping a deeper lipstick onto the inner parts of my lips and a lighter shade toward the outer corners, I was able to create depth that made my lips look a lot juicier.
