The Pro Secrets Behind Ciara's Signature Ponytails

When it comes to red carpet hair, Ciara signs, seals, and delivers each and every time. Most recently, the singer hit the red carpet at the 2018 ESPY awards with a gorgeous, super-long ponytail that demanded attention. It was right then and there that it hit us: she rarely ever wears her ponytail the same. While it can be easy to run out of ideas when figuring out different ways to style the tried-and-true style, it seems like child's play for Ciara. So, in hopes of enhancing our own updo styling game, we spoke with her longtime stylist to figure out the duo's secrets.

"What really makes [our] relationship so great is that we're both hair-obsessed," Cesar Ramirez tells Refinery29. "We love all hairstyles, but a pony is for sure one of her top favorites. When a ponytail is done right it makes a woman feel super sexy and feminine. It’s also a great way to keep a look young and chic versus looking overly dressed [up]."

As inspiration for the next time you reach for your scrunchy or want to change up the classic style, we've rounded up Ciara's best ponytail styles with the help of Ramirez, ahead.

One of Ramirez's favorites, the hair guru wanted to change up the typical low ponytail by adding dimension. Pro tip: Apply Biosilk Volumizing Therapy Texture powder to roots for major volume sans teasing or heat styling.

The 58th Grammy Awards, 2016

For this award show, Ramirez focused on not pulling attention away from her sexy dress, so he opted for a loose, messy low pony. "My goal is always to balance a look," he says. "Ciara’s dress was very revealing with a plunging neckline and completely open back. I didn’t want loose hair to compete with the silhouette."

For this dreamy updo, Ramirez used a blonde, full lace wig to create a soft, Brigitte Bardot-inspired face-frame with the high ponytail. "Blondes look great on Ciara but we are very cautious not to damage her beautiful and healthy natural hair," he reveals.

Since she was hosting the event, Ramirez knew that Ciara would be on-the-move and wanted his client to have natural-looking bounce when she walked on stage. "I wanted a look with texture that would flow through the air and bounce with each step," he says. "The audience got twice the show and a little drama with this half-pony."
Level Up Music Video, 2018

The singer recently released the song "Level Up," so Ramirez felt it was only right to deliver drama for the comeback music video, calling this look "the "Glamazon Half Pony." Pro tip: Lightly blowdry damp hair after layering in a heat protector, like Mizani Thermasmooth, but allow natural your natural texture to come through a bit, so don't flat iron hair.

The ESPYS, 2018

"Seeing as to how structured and bodycon her dress was, I knew a clean, high, yet structured, pony that would complete the look with a goddess-like vibe," says Ramirez. Using a ponytail attachment from his hair piece line WILDFORM (which launches this fall), he added that extra drama to Ciara's already-voluminous ponytail.
