His House

This subversive genre flick made waves at Sundance and is headed to Netflix just in time for Halloween. A young refugee couple escape war and violence only to find something even more sinister when they finally achieve asylum in the UK in this critically-acclaimed haunted house horror.

Kim Yu-bin and Oh Jun-u are the only survivors of a zombie apocalypse in their huge apartment complex. Now the two young strangers will have to find strength in each other in order to survive the hordes of undead in their home. This brand new Korean horror movie offers a timely spin on the genre and some legit scares.

Sleepy Hollow 



Starring: Johnny Depp, Christina Ricci, Miranda Richardson, Michael Gambon, Casper Van Dien, Jeffrey Jones.

Tim Burton is a director who built his whole aesthetic on Halloween, so his creepy take on the  tale of Ichabod Crane is a perfect seasonal watch. The ever-ethereal Ricci is the star here as she plays off Depp, who arrives in the small town to investigate a series of strange beheadings.

Insidious



Starring: Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, Barbara Hershey.

James Wan brings his devilishly handsome muse to this terrifying haunted house tale. When a young family moves into a new house with their young children they have to face down a series of powerful supernatural threats that will haunt your dreams.

The Evil Dead 



Starring: Bruce Campbell, Ellen Sandweiss, Richard DeManincor, Betsy Baker, Theresa Tilly.

There are some movies that just scream Halloween and The Evil Dead is one of them. Sam Raimi's iconic debut centers on a group of teens — including horror maverick Bruce Campbell — who heads to a cabin in the woods only to find a cursed book and awaken the dead!

Apostle

Don't let the appearance of Dan Stevens lull you into a hunky sense of security here, Apostle is only for the most hardcore horror hounds. This gruesome period folk horror delights in making us shudder as Stevens' heads to a utopian island where his sister is being held captive by a religious cult. Spoiler alert... things aren't what they seem.

Creep

Though the word mumblecore might make you think "WTF?" or "Oh, I love Greta Gerwig," this horror flick led by the indie genre's darling, Mark Duplass, is truly terrifying. Duplass plays Josef, a deranged loner who hires a videographer and quickly becomes obsessed with tormenting him. 

Green Room



Starring: Anton Yelchin, Imogen Poots, Alia Shawkat, Joe Cole, Callum Turner, Patrick Stewart.

Nazi punks, fuck off! With a performance of that classic Dead Kennedys song in a neo-Nazi bar, a young punk band lights a spark that becomes an inferno after they see a patron being murdered by Nazis. The crew have to fight their way out of the titular backstage location in this utterly unique and harrowing trapped room horror.

The Girl With All The Gifts



Starring: Sennia Nanua, Gemma Arterton, Paddy Considine, Glenn Close.

Based on Mike Carey's brilliant British dystopian novel of the same name, this is a zombie movie like no other. At a strange school in Britain a young woman comes of age, shackled and confused with only her teacher to confide in. But she holds a deadly secret that might be the key to saving the world.

The Blackcoat's Daughter



Starring: Emma Roberts, Kiernan Shipka, Lucy Boynton, Lauren Holly, James Remar.

Before she was getting up to chilling adventures as Sabrina, Kiernan Shipka starred alongside Emma Roberts in this atmospheric indie horror about two girls at boarding school and a third on a journey through an icy winter to reach the institution. Surreal and scary, this is a unique female-led horror movie that subverts expectations. 

Sweetheart

Kiersey Clemons should have won every award for this stunning role as a shipwrecked survivor who has to face not only the wild but a terrifying threat in the deep. J.D. Dillard directs this brilliant Blumhouse movie that deserves far more love than it gets.

As Above, So Below



Starring: Perdita Weeks, Ben Feldman, Edwin Hodge, François Civil, Marion Lambert, Ali Marhyar.

Going into the sprawling Paris catacombs seems like a recipe for disaster to even the biggest thrill-seeker, but a group of good looking American archeologists and explorers decide they should do it anyway in this mind-bending and surprisingly scary French-set horror.

Candyman



Starring: Virginia Madsen, Tony Todd, Xander Berkeley, Kasi Lemmons.

A young woman studying urban legends stumbles on one that's all too real, and 
Tony Todd gives the performance of a lifetime as the folkloric legend known only as the Candyman in this brilliant horror classic from the mind of Clive Barker.

Train to Busan

If you're tired of zombie movies then Train to Busan is here to change your mind. Dynamic, action-packed, and heartfelt, this South Korean film centers on a group of commuters stuck on a train filled with the undead and it's one hell of a ride.

The Autopsy of Jane Doe 



Starring: Emile Hirsch, Brian Cox, Olwen Catherine Kelly.

A pair of morticians attempt to autopsy a body that defies science, ending up in a nightmarish scenario that has to be seen to be believed. Horror fans often call this one of the most underrated films of the recent age, and now it's on Netflix so you can make up your own mind.

In the Shadow of the Moon



Starring: Boyd Holbrook, Cleopatra Coleman, Michael C. Hall.

This unexpected serial killer is full of twists and turns and a stellar performance from Michael C. Hall as an obsessive detective who'll do anything to catch the murderer who reappears every nine years. It's hard to say more without spoiling its secrets but is a must watch for horror fans.

The Invitation



Starring: Logan Marshall-Green, Tammy Blanchard, Michiel Huisman, Emayatzy Corinealdi, Lindsay Burdge, Michelle Krusiec, Mike Doyle, Jay Larson, John Carroll Lynch.

Karyn Kusama knocked it out of the park with this searing cult chiller that's one of the best horror movies of the last decade. An unexpected invite from the mother of his child leads a couple down a dangerous path at the most awkward dinner party ever.

The Babysitter



Starring: Samara Weaving, Judah Lewis, Hana Mae Lee, Robbie Amell, Bella Thorne.

Before she was one of Hollywood's most in-demand actresses, Samara Weaving was the titular childminder in this twisty slasher movie that will have you in hysterics. A young boy has to survive the night when it turns out that his hot babysitter isn't quite what she seems.

The Babysitter: Killer Queen

House of 1000 Corpses



Starring: Rainn Wilson, Sid Haig, Bill Moseley, Matthew McGrory, Sheri Moon Zombie, Karen Black, Erin Daniels, Jennifer Jostyn.

This one's not for the fainthearted. Rob Zombie came out swinging with this ode to classic grindhouse horror. A group of arrogant youngsters hunt down a local legend known as Dr. Satan only to find a far more real threat in the Firefly family. A serial killer clan who love to inflict pain, they're truly a contemporary horror nightmare. If you're gore averse maybe skip this brutal roadtrip flick.

The Binding



Starring: Mia Maestro, Riccardo Scamarcio, Mariella Lo Sardo, Giulia Patrignani, Federica Rosellini, and Raffaella D'Avella.

Another of Netflix's forays into gothic storytelling, The Binding centers on the dangers of marital bliss and joining a family you know nothing about. During a visit with her potential mother-in-law, a bride-to-be finds herself battling a vicious curse that seems to be focusing on her daughter. 

Vampires vs. The Bronx



Starring: Jaden Michael, Gerald W. Jones III, Gregory Diaz IV, Sarah Gadon, Cliff “Method Man” Smith, Chris Redd, and Zoe Saldaña.

When vampires attack their neighborhood in the Bronx, a group of teenagers have to come together to protect their home. Yeah, it's a gentrification metaphor. And it's a really fun addition to the vampire movie canon.

Unfriended


Starring: Shelley Hennig, Moses Storm, Renee Olstead, Will Peltz, Jacob Wysocki, Courtney Halverson, Heather Sossaman, Mickey River, Cal Barnes, Matthew Bohrer, Christa Hartsock

One of the first modern horror movies to play on the horrors of the internet, Unfriended throws a group of teens into a nightmare when they get a skype message from an old classmate that they thought committed suicide.

Netflix is really committing to the gothic romance theme this Fall with The Haunting of Bly Manor and this Ben Wheatley directed adaptation of Daphne du Maurier's classic novel. When a young woman gets engaged to a wealthy and handsome widower she quickly moves into his large home only to find it hard to escape the memory of his dead ex-wife.
