Hilary Duff Has 15 Tattoos — & No One Ever Noticed
We'd be lying if we said that we haven't been copying every beauty trend set by Hilary Duff since the early 2000s. When she crimped her hair and fastened it with butterfly clips, so did we; when she brought back curtain bangs, we called our stylists; and whenever she adds yet another tiny tattoo to her growing collection, we screenshot it and find the nearest tattoo artist.
Don't feel bad if you never noticed any of the former Disney sweetheart's 15 tattoos before — that was her intention. In 2015, Duff told Ellen DeGeneres that she loves getting tattoos, but prefers hiding them on her arms. "Part of me loves tattoos, but part of me doesn’t want the full commitment of getting to see them all the time," she explained.
Somewhat unfortunately for Duff, we're big fans of her designs — which is exactly why we hunted down every one we could. Ahead, the official guide to Duff's under-the-radar ink.
Duff never confirmed exactly when she added the wishbone tattoo to her wrist, but according to Twitter, fans first spotted it in 2011. Since then, it's been said that the actress got the ink to signify good luck.
Duff isa cool mom. Proof: She has this tattoo of her eldest son's name, Luca, on her wrist. No word on exactly when Duff added this one, but it's safe to say she got it some time after Luca was born in 2012.
One of Duff's most notable designs is her tiny red heart tattoo. She debuted the wrist tattoo in March 2013, captioning the photo, "All is full of love..."
That same month, Duff got a matching best friend tattoo with Alanna Masterson. The tiny two-cent coin was designed by Dr. Woo.
In July 2014, Dr. Woo revealed Duff's second matching tattoo with Masterson: a ghost. A few years later, Duff explained the meaning behind it. "It says 'ride or die' on the hem of the ghost's skirt," Duff told Refinery29. "This is definitely my favorite and no one really knows it's there. The ghost doesn't really represent anything."
"Thick As Thieves"
Duff also has a matching sister tattoo with Haylie. Although the quote on her arm — "thick as thieves" — is one of her oldest, she didn't reveal the sentimental meaning behind it until appearing on the Ellen DeGeneres show in 2015.
After spending a lot of time in New York while filming Younger, Duff decided to get a tattoo dedicated to her new neighborhood, Brooklyn.
Duff's inner arm tattoo of an arrow has faded a lot since this photo was taken, but back when it was freshly inked you could spot all the glorious details, including the crescent moon, star, and shapes cut through by the arrow.
Duff recruited Dr. Woo to add one of her biggest tattoos to the collection in October 2016: two budding roses on the inside of her right bicep.
Duff added two lines of cursive script to her arm in December 2017, s a nod to one of Bette Davis' famous punchlines from an appearance on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. When asked to offer a piece of advice to young actresses trying to break into the business, Davis said, "Take Fountain" — as in, Fountain Avenue, a shortcut that literally leads into Hollywood.
Duff later said that the tattoo is supposed to be an homage to Davis' sassy advice. "People ask me all the time, what kind of advice do you have for young actors, but there is no one thing, there's no one formula, so for her to say, "Take Fountain [Avenue]" — it's brilliant," she explained. "And I have been there, trying to get to three auditions in one day and just stuck on Santa Monica Boulevard [instead of taking the faster route, Fountain]. The meaning for me was not taking the main road, so it is funny, but it also has a little more meaning to me."
