Florence Pugh’s Makeup Artist Spills All Of Her Beauty Secrets

If Florence Pugh's mind-boggling performance in Midsommar didn't convince you she's one of the biggest breakout stars to watch, then her Oscar-nominated role as Amy March in Greta Gerwig's 2019 adaptation of Little Women definitely did. Previous portrayals of the youngest March sister cast her as a selfish, melodramatic brat, but Pugh's version had us thinking, Maybe I'm actually an Amy. It also left us wanting to befriend the star and steal her brow gel.

In our best attempt at the latter, we caught up with Pugh's go-to makeup artist, Londoner Naoko Scintu, who divulged her step-by-step process for creating the actress' velvety complexion and brushed-up brows. Ahead, visual evidence of Pugh as a 2020 red-carpet (and Instagram) star on the rise — plus every beauty product currently in her routine.

At Refinery29, we’re here to help you navigate this overwhelming world of stuff. All of our market picks are independently selected and curated by the editorial team. If you buy something we link to on our site, Refinery29 may earn commission.

Velvet Skin

"Florence truly has one of the most gorgeous faces, with her big eyes and full lips," Scintu says. "My whole approach is about enhancing her natural beauty, and that starts with a fresh skin base."

Omorovicza Oxygen Booster

According to Scintu, Pugh is loyal to Hungarian skin-care brand Omorovicza. "Florence loves this brand," she says. "She uses the Oxygen Booster, which is like a lightweight plumping serum made from natural minerals sourced in Budapest, often followed by the brand's moisturiser, too."

Suqqu Nude Wear Liquid SPF 15

The key for foundation and concealer is a dewy finish. "I love Suqqu's liquid foundation on Florence," Scintu says. "It's a Japanese brand but they sell it at Harrods and Selfridges in London, and the finish is beautiful — so lightweight and fresh."

IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye Concealer

Bye Bye Undereye is Scintu's holy grail. "I love this concealer, and I always use it on Florence — and pretty much all my clients — because it's full coverage but wears like bare skin," she says.

Jurlique Silk Finishing Powder

To prevent excess shine on Pugh's oil-prone T-zone, Scintu pats on this translucent finishing powder. "Jurlique's rose silk powder is amazing because it's clean and natural, made with only Australian botanical ingredients, so it mattifies excess oil without clogging pores," she says.

Dewy Highlight

For highlighter and cheek colour, Scintu picks formulas that are cream-based so that they mimic the skin's natural texture, only brighter and dewier.

Tom Ford Shade & Illuminate In Scintillate

"My favourite cream cheek/highlight palette of all time is Tom Ford's classic Shade & Illuminate," Scintu says. "The two-toned Scintillate shade comes with a soft champagne highlighter that instantly warms Florence's face."

Sensai Supreme Illuminator

Scintu often cocktails two different highlighter formulas, topping the Tom Ford illuminator with this pearlescent soft cream by Sensai. "I use my fingers and dab it over the high points of the skin," she says. "I also love it on the shoulders and collarbone for a subtle body glow."

Feathered Brows

There's no way to admire Pugh without taking note of her gorgeously full and feathered brows — which are almost all natural. "Luckily, Florence wasn't a teen in the '90s, so she never over-tweezed her brows," Scintu says. "But we like to make her strong shape even more full, with a few tricks."

Glossier Brow Flick

According to Scintu, an eyebrow pen can be a brow girl's best friend. "I like to use a skinny felt-tip pen like Glossier's Brow Flick and use tiny brushstrokes to mimic the hair," she says.

Dior Diorshow Brow Styler

After added hair-like strokes, it's onto shading. "I use Dior's retractable brow pencil in a soft taupe brown to fill out the brow shape," Scintu continues. "It's ultra-fine so I get a lot of precision and a natural look."

Wide Eyes

"When it comes to how we approach the eyes, we always accentuate the wide and round shape," Scintu says. "Florence doesn't like a dark smoky eye, but sometimes we'll play with a soft peach shadow or a shimmery lid."

Maybelline Full 'N Soft Mascara

"I'm so picky with mascara, but the best mascara I've ever used is Maybelline Full and Soft," Scintu says. "With it, the lashes stay up and fluttery, and they never fall."

Flushed Lips

Scintu tells us that Pugh isn't a gloss girl or a huge fan of bright pigments: She prefers a balm-like YLBB (your lips but better) flush.

Suqqu Moisture Rich Lipstick

"We love this Suqqu Moisture Rich lip balm," Scintu says. "They have so many colours, but Number One is our favourite. It's a peachy tone that's sheer but moisturising, and gives a healthy shine."

Surratt Moderniste Lip Pencil

To accentuate the contour of the lips, Scintu sometimes adds a nude lip liner, like this cream pencil by Surratt. "I love Surratt's Dew Drop foundation and this lip pencil," she says. "Both are super natural, which is what Florence likes."
