Our Staffers Put Long-Wear Makeup To The Test At Our Holiday Dance Party

There's a generally accepted notion within the beauty industry that makeup looks best an hour or so after it's been applied. Once it's had a chance to soften and become one with your skin it feels less done and, according to many, far more beautiful. But what happens when that hour or so involves an open bar and raging dance party? Will you end up with the artfully-disheveled allure of Kate Moss' cool-girl '90s eyeliner, Grace Jones' lived-in Studio54 glam... or a sweaty and smeared mess?

We all know that long-wear makeup can last a lot longer than most, but how it wears down can be far more unpredictable. With all the new long-wear makeup coming out lately, we decided to put five to the test at Refinery29's annual company party, then we checked in on our testers every hour to photograph their journey. Keep clicking for more.

Who: Michaela Rollings, Associate Marketing Manager
What: Tarte Chrome Paint Shadow Pot in Park Ave Princess and Steel The Show

Rollings is a self proclaimed connoisseur of the long-wear game. "I'm not a fan of touchups, so I want my products to be one-and-done," she says. She gave Tarte's new Chrome Paints a go as the metallic toppers to her Xenon-inspired getup and was blown away by how pigmented the powder-to-cream shadows were. "The formula itself is dry, but had a metallic, almost wet finish with a ton of sparkle," she says. "The only downside to the pigmentation was that the product has a bit of fallout that's a little hard to remove if you get it on your cheeks."

Rollings wore Park Ave Princess (bronze) all over her lid, then defined her eyes with Steel The Show (silvery navy) in a cat-eye shape toward the outer corners of her lids.

An hour of dancing and drinking later, the pigment was still intact. "I made a point not to touch my eyes throughout the night," says Rollings. "I knew this product would have staying power when I got some on my cheek and couldn't rub it off — and I was right. It's basically a shadow and primer in one."

By the end of the night, Rollings' eyes looked almost perfect — save for a tiny amount of smudging on her lower lashline. "I definitely worked up a sweat dancing but I had no problems with the product sliding around or falling off," she says. "I'll definitely wear this product again."

Who: Meghal Janardan, Associate Video Producer
What: Wet n Wild Megalast Liquid Catsuit Liquid Eyeshadow in Gun Metal

Since our party was space themed, Janardan opted for a gunmetal shade of Wet n Wild's liquid shadows. "I can usually tell right away if something will last," she says. "The shadow dried down in 30 seconds and didn't budge so I was pretty confident."

The application itself wasn't as easy to get right. "It took three layers to get full opacity," she says. "I had to wait for it to set between layers or the product would appear patchy." Still, Janardan enjoyed the applicator, which she found easy to use to create her winged-out graphic eye sans eyeshadow primer.

"By the second check in, people were just starting to fill the dance floor so it wasn't too hot," she says. "The product still looked great and I didn't have to reapply!"

By 11 p.m. the eyeshadow started migrating a bit toward Janardan's crease, while the wing itself wasn't as crisp as it was at the start of the night. Still, Janardan was impressed by how well the product held up, especially considering she spent the majority of the night in the middle of the dance floor. "There wasn't any fallout or smudging on my face," says Janardan. "I wasn't a fan of how many layers I needed to use to get full opacity, but I think these are great if you want to try fun colors and have time to learn how to use the product properly."

Who: Samantha Richmond, Video Intern
What: Stila Shimmer & Glow Liquid Eye Shadow in Pigalle

Although Richmond loves makeup, she's not one to wear it every day. "If I'm going to wear makeup at all, it better look good and last all day long," she says. To go with her sparkly green ensemble, Richmond wore Stila's new Shimmer & Glow liquid shadow in Pigalle (shimmery cranberry) all over her lids.

After buffing concealer onto her eyes as a base, Richmond applied three layers of Pigalle all over her lid, stopping just shy of her crease. "The shadow is so pigmented and true to color," she says. "I didn't set the shadow with a powder but I did hit it with a little setting spray once I finished my makeup."

Richmond was shocked by how well the shadow was holding up — especially after an hour of dancing. "My second check-in was really similar to the first," she says. "The liquid eyeshadow didn't even crease on my oily eyelids, which was amazing."

Richmond did notice the shadow lose some of its pigment throughout the night. "Even though the color faded by the end of the night, it didn't run, smear, or crease," she adds. "Honestly, the only pitfall to this shadow is how fast it dries: You have to work quickly when applying to make sure it's exactly where you want it before it sets."

Who: Yuki Mizuma, Assistant Photo Researcher
What: Laura Mercier Velour Extreme Matte Lipstick in Extreme

Mizuma wanted a deep aubergine lipstick to complement her glittery highlighter and found her match in Laura Mercer's new formula in Extreme, which, admittedly, was a bit patchier than the other colors in the collection, she says. "Once I layered the product on a few times, the true color came through," she says. "The narrow, dome-shaped applicator is so easy to work with and I didn't find myself straying outside of my natural lip line, which is something I normally do!"

Mizuma also noted how comfortable the lipstick was. "It didn't make my lips feel dry at all and I was able to go the whole night without wanting to apply my lip balm."

A couple cocktails later, Mizuma noticed the product had worn off towards the center of her lips where it came in contact with her drink. "I'm always afraid that I'm going to end up with wrinkly, butthole lips when I wear matte, long-wear lipsticks, but I was so happy to see that this product didn't do that. In fact, it was comfortable all night long."

An hour later the product was still clinging to Mizuma's lips. "It stayed on pretty well through my final check-in until I got home," she says. "I actually had to use a cotton pad and some makeup remover to finally get the lipstick off." Despite the rubbing, Mizuma still says her lips felt soft post-removal.

"I really like the texture of this product and since then I've worn some of the other shades from the collection," says Mizuma. "This was the first time I've worn a vampy lip and I loved that it took me out of my comfort zone of tinted lip balms. It inspired me to explore shades I never thought I could pull off."

Who: Channing Hargrove, Fashion News Writer
What: Marc Jacobs Le Marc Liquid Lip Crayon in Merlot Blow

According to Hargrove, this Marc Jacob's Liquid Lip Crayon was the product she was born to try. "I'm always paranoid about my lipstick during a night out, especially if I'm going to have more than one drink, so this challenge was perfect for me," says Hargrove.

She chose the shade Merlot Blow — a deep burgundy shade — to match her all-back outfit. "The product glided onto my lips like balm and once it set my mouth didn't feel tight or dry," she says. "The pencil-like applicator made it so easy to use. I lined my lips and filled them in, then I went around twice for good luck."

Hargrove (quite literally) danced all night. In fact, she was so busy dancing, she didn't even check her pout. "I didn't have an actual mirror, but based on my Instagram Stories, it still looked pretty cute by 10 p.m.!" she joked. "It didn't fade or wear off in the middle which is what I was most worried about."

In the name of a good makeup test, Hargrove committed the cardinal sin of beauty: She slept with her makeup on. "Don't judge, but my lips still looked great after my final check-in and the morning after, too," she says. "I passed out with my makeup on, but my lips were still intact!"

Since the party, Hargrove has worn the shade multiple times. "You do need an oil to get it off (I double cleanse), but I think it's more than worth it for lips like this."
