Amber Tamblyn Received An Outpouring Of Responses After Sharing Open Letter To James Woods

Amber Tamblyn's account of an incident in which James Woods allegedly tried to "pick up" her and a friend when she was 16 years old is quickly gaining traction. Today the actress said she has received a large number of messages from people sharing their own stories about encounters with Woods.
The actress initially shared her story on Twitter after Woods criticized a film that includes a romance between a 24-year-old man and 17-year-old boy.
Many were quick to point out that Woods, who has a track record of homophobia, has dated at least two women who were 40 years younger than the actor. Tamblyn chimed in to share her disturbing account: "James Woods tried to pick me and my friend up at a restaurant once. He wanted to take us to Vegas. 'I'm 16' I said. 'Even better' he said," she tweeted.

After Woods branded Tamblyn a liar, she wrote a powerful open letter to the actor which was published on Teen Vogue's website. She urged Woods to take advantage of this "teachable moment" and rethink his words and actions. "Since you've now called me a liar, I will now call you a silencer. I see your gaslight and now will raise you a scorched earth," Tamblyn wrote.
Less than one day later, she says that she's received an outpouring of responses. "I cannot tell you how many people have texted, messaged and emailed me with personal stories about James Woods over the last day," Tamblyn tweeted on Thursday.
The tweet itself inspired over 250 responses within hours.
As Tamblyn made clear in her open letter to Woods, girls and women everywhere are subjected to doubt and shame when they share stories like hers. So although plenty of her followers have never encountered Woods himself, her letter takes a powerful stand on behalf of all women. And based on the responses, people are grateful that Tamblyn is using her platform to address a universal issue.

Earlier this week, Amber Tamblyn shared a disturbing story about an encounter with actor James Woods in which he allegedly attempted to "pick up" her and a friend when she was 16 years old.

After Woods denounced the story as a lie, Tamblyn shared a screenshot of a text exchange with the aforementioned friend and penned a powerful open letter published on Teen Vogue.
"Since I know people love to question the integrity and honesty of women when they come forward with stories like this, here you go," Tamblyn posted, accompanied by a screenshot of the texts.
For his part, Woods maintains that the Twitter backlash is due to "trolls" who target him because of his conservative views.
In her open letter to Woods, Tamblyn wrote that he's experiencing a "teachable moment."
"The hope being that through this experience, you can change. You can redefine the man who will come after this moment and this man who came before," Tamblyn continued. "Since you've now called me a liar, I will now call you a silencer. I see your gaslight and now will raise you a scorched earth."
In addition to elaborating on the details of the encounter she previously described, Tamblyn brought up the crucial point that women deal with this type of predatory behavior as a matter of course.
"The saddest part of this story doesn't even concern me but concerns the universal woman's story. The nation's harmful narrative of disbelieving women first, above all else," she wrote. "Asking them to first corroborate or first give proof or first make sure we're not misremembering or first consider the consequences of speaking out or first let men give their side or first just let your sanity come last."

Actor James Woods, who most recently made news for his homophobic comments about a 10-year-old child, is now using his bigotry to criticize a film about a gay romance. But his derogatory comments quickly backfired after Amber Tamblyn recounted a disturbing encounter in which Woods tried to pick her up when she was just 16 years old.
Armie Hammer stars in Call Me by Your Name, a film about a 24-year-old man's relationship with a 17-year-old boy. Over the weekend, Woods retweeted conservative commentator Chad Felix Greene’s Twitter status which read, "24 year old man. 17 year old boy. Stop." For good measure Woods threw in a comment of his own: "As they quietly chip away at the last barriers of decency. #NAMBLA."
Armie Hammer quickly responded on Twitter.
Although Woods was apparently too cowardly to respond, Business Insider previously reported on his romances with much younger women. According to the outlet, the actor began dating Ashley Madison when she was 19 and he was 59. After their split, a 66-year-old Woods began a relationship with 20-year-old Kristen Bauguess.
But Tamblyn's encounter with Woods is arguably the most disturbing. "James Woods tried to pick me and my friend up at a restaurant once," she recalled. "He wanted to take us to Vegas. 'I'm 16' I said. 'Even better' he said."
We'll venture a guess that Woods is repulsed by Call Me by Your Name because it features a gay romance, and he did a pretty terrible job of pretending the characters' ages are his idea of what "chip[s] away the last barriers of decency." That said, his alleged comments to Tamblyn are an excellent example of things that are indecent.
