Our Go-To Summer Night Fun For When It's Just Too Damn Hot In NYC

If you're wondering how to stay cool during those sweltering summer evenings in New York City, look no further. Refinery29 is partnering with Rooftop Cinema Club to showcase empowering female-driven films in June and July. At each event, Rooftop Cinema Club, which hosts experiential screenings in cities from London to L.A., will pair major blockbusters with one of Refinery29's own Shatterbox Anthology films, working to spotlight the women of Hollywood and the mesmerizing stories they've told.

Ahead, find all of the event dates throughout the summer. We hope you'll be able to join one of these gorgeous NYC showings — we've got the popcorn and champagne ready.

Just 7% of 2016's top films were directed by women. Refinery29 wants to change this by giving 12 female directors a chance to claim their power. Our message to Hollywood? You can't win without women. Watch new films every month on Refinery29.com/Shatterbox and Comcast Watchable.

June 20, 2017: 9:30 PM – 11:30 PM

On June 20, we're kicking off these inspiring nights with a special screening of our original documentary, "Nidal," in celebration of International Refugee Day. A heartbreaking portrait of the struggles still facing the displaced children of Syria, "Nidel" charts one family's courageous journey to a Lebanese refugee camp — and the ways that this harrowing experience forever impacted their daughter. Fresh from its premiere at SXSW, "Nidel" resonates as a testament to the enduring power of empathy, even in the wake of unthinkable violence.

And if you're a The Handmaid's Tale super-fan, we're betting you'll love watching Clive Owen and Julianne Moore save humanity from another population crisis in 2006's Academy Award-nominated film, Children of Men. Grab your tickets here.

Next, we're heading to Brooklyn for a screening of Shatterbox's Watching You Watching Me — an intimate meditation on the ways strangers perceive us and the underlying assumptions that influence our identities.

Speaking of strangers, we're capping off this evening with 2016's acclaimed intergalactic drama, Arrival. Turns out, all that's standing between us and cosmic understanding is Amy Adam's astonishing Golden Globe-nominated portrayal of a linguistics professor struggling to communicate with these intergalactic visitors. Don't forget to snag your tickets here.

You'll want to stick around in Brooklyn for this musical extravaganza of an evening. First, we're going behind the scenes with Sound Off's up-close look at Chargaux, the borough's most inspiringly rebellious art collective & contemporary ensemble. Did we mention the group is composed of two violin and viola-rocking women? Yes, please.

Obviously, only the Bellas could compete with Charagaux's inimitable cool, so RCC will keep the melodies flowing thanks to 2012's cult favorite, "Pitch Perfect." We've been trying to harmonize in the shower like Anna Kendrick and Brittany Snow ever since. Get your tickets here.

We may be on a roof in Manhattan, but in our hearts, we're joining Refinery29's own Lucie Fink for a 5 day Costa Rican wellness retreat. Catch all of Lucie's summer-approved relaxation tips and tricks while plotting your next adventure.

Stick around for kind of another kind of journey with 2016's nostalgia-packed Edge of Seventeen. PSA: Hailee Steinfeld's Golden Globe-nominated depiction of serious teenage drama will bring back all of high school's faded aches and awkwardness. Tickets available here.

June 30, 2017: 8:30 PM – 11:00 PM

We're promising a night filled with subversive, badass women. First, come along to California's verdant Central Valley, where a collective of anarchist, activist "sisters" ("weed nuns," as they'd put it) has been growing and selling their crops of marijuana since 2015. Their boundary-breaking story illuminates the perils and enormous potential of this freshly-legal industry.

Next, jump in Charlize Theron's rig with 2015's wildly acclaimed Mad Max: Fury Road. Don't forget to get your tickets here.

June 30, 2017: 9:30 PM – 11:30 PM

First, join RCC for a screening of Shatterbox Anthology short, The Press Conference, directed by Meera Menon (you've probably seen her 2016 feminist smash hit, Equity).

Stick around for Glenn Close's career-defining portrayal of a woman scorned in 1987's Fatal Attraction. Has anyone been able to look at a boiling pot the same since? We didn't think so. Grab your tickets here.

July 1, 2017: 9:30 PM – 11:30 PM

On July 1st, we're starting the night on the streets of Los Angeles with #HappyPeriod — the revolutionary organization supplying homeless women with urgently-needed feminine hygiene products and affirming that menstruation must be seen as a social justice issue. Feeling inspired? Learn more here.

Next, stick around for of Oscar heavyweight American Beauty. Get your tickets here.

July 3, 2017 8:30 PM – 10:30 PM

Next, RCC heads to Manhattan's YOTEL for a screening of Chloe Sevigny's directorial debut, Kitty. The story of an imaginative young girl (and the world's indifference to her stories), Shatterbox's Kitty is almost certainly the most whimsical film you'll see this summer.

After Kitty, stick around for 20th Century Women's nostalgic look at the late 1970s. Set in the blissed-out Southern California of the Carter era, 20th Century Women brings together a powerhouse cast, including Annette Bening, Kristen Stewart, and Elle Fanning, to explore the life of an unconventional family during this volatile moment in American history. Don't miss Bening's unforgettable portrayal of 70s cool (for which she earned a Golden Globes nomination). Grab tickets here.
