How To Make Fringe Work For YOUR Closet

Fashion trends are cyclical in nature. We hear this time and time and time again. But, this season, perhaps more than ever, makes a strong case for this notion. From Alexander Wang's '90s-nostalgia runway to the '70s-era fringe seen at Joseph Altuzarra, The Row, and Tibi, there's little room for debate. But, we're not saying that's a bad thing — not at all. The resurgence of these once-loved styles means that, now, a whole new generation of women can wear and love them, too.
And, it should come as little surprise that our favorite celebrities are already donning the tasseled styles — they (and their stylists) are usually pretty on top of these things, after all. But, since we're not ones to be left out, we're drawing inspiration from Kate Mara, Olivia Palermo, the one and only Tilda Swinton, and more stylish gals for unique ways to interpret the trend for our closets this spring. Ahead, see fringed skirts, fringed dresses, tops, and even purses, too! Because, isn't imitation the sincerest form of flattery?

The fringed hem of Olivia Palermo's midi-skirt makes for gorgeous movement as she walks. Pair with standout heels that will draw even more attention to your lower half.

In case Palermo's outfit wasn't proof enough, we present Exhibit B. This demonstrates that, yes, the '70s hippie trend can be totally chic.

If you're hesitant to try fringe clothing — we don't blame you! — a tasseled bag like Kate Mara's is an easy and subtle way to embrace the look.

Ahh, Tilda Swinton, one actress who is always willing to step outside the box, even if it means breaking a few sartorial rules.

Take a cue from Swinton and try an all-over fringe, if you dare. It could result in a fantastic street-style snap (see above).

Go Gatsby-glam in a silky, flowy frock like Jaime King's. The peacock-like print adds tons of interest to the otherwise-understated silhouette.

In fact, combining prints and tassels is cool for pieces other than dresses. Go big or go home, right?

Okay, okay, Rita Ora's strip-fringed, leather Roberto Cavalli dress is a whole lot of look. The takeaway? Think boldly. A standout piece, like a fringed-back blouse, will be just as eye-catching for any number of summer fetes (because you might not be walking any red carpets).

Keep it simple: Choose one statement piece, and style the rest of your outfit around it.
