Rachel Mlinarchik of Fair Vanity

Why is a black-and-white palette your top trend for spring?
"There is something luxurious about wearing mostly white, yet it's not an expensive look to build. Plus, basics like black and white will never go out of style, because they create a clean palette for any trendy color or print the fashion world can come up with. I still have (and wear) a white button-down from Gap that I bought when I was 14 — talk about cost per wear!"

Seeing how spring is almost always synonymous with pastels and prints, why do you think black-and-white is in the spotlight now?
"I'd like to think that designers are empowering fashion lovers to invest in pieces that are timeless, and thus, sustainable. Wearing the same white trousers through several seasons and decades is kind to our wallets in these tough economic times, and also kind to the earth."

Is there a styling trick for making this color scheme look fresh and modern, and less conservative?
"Wearing all white with only one black element (or the reverse) keeps your look fresh, whereas too many elements and detailed prints can seem dated. When in doubt, keep it simple and limit your palette as much as possible to stay modern."

How do you personalize the trend, and adapt it to your own style?
"I have an attraction to all things sci-fi and edgy, so I already own a lot of black. This spring, I'm investing in white pieces that will bring a lightness to my wardrobe, but I plan to pair my whites with studs, leather, and ankle boots. Jason Wu's spring '13 ready-to-wear collection is a big influence."

And finally, what other trends are on your radar for spring?
"I've gotten much more brave with lipstick this year, so I'm eager to embrace the bright pink lips that seem to be holding strong for spring!"

And finally, what other trends are on your radar for spring?

Why is a black-and-white palette your top trend for spring?
"I absolutely love the black-and-white trend for spring because it's classic, as well as fashion-forward, making it timeless. With black and white, the possibilities are endless — you can color-block, mix prints and textures, go mod, or wear a bold print that otherwise might seem overwhelming."

Seeing how spring is almost always synonymous with pastels and prints, why do you think black-and-white is in the spotlight now?
"I think [it's] because it's unexpected and exciting — it's a nice departure from the normal pastels and bright colors. There is also something mesmerizing about the stark contrast between the colors, and it is the truest reflection of spring by representing the darkness of winter and lightness of summer."

Is there a styling trick for making this color scheme look fresh and modern, and less conservative?
"Try to avoid traditional pieces and instead spice it up a bit. To keep your look current, go for interesting textures and fabrics, such as leather or brocade, and progressive silhouettes, such as peplum."

How do you personalize the trend, and adapt it to your own style?
"One of the greatest things about the black-and-white trend is that everyone already has the ingredients in their closet! I love and wear this combo all year round. My style is pretty eclectic, so to really make this trend my own, I stick to the basics and tend to color-block. At the moment, my spring uniform is a white T-shirt, coated black jeans, and a perforated leather jacket — a casual look that [gets] a necessary edge from the color contrast. I also tend to keep my jewelry pretty simple, sticking to basic gold for a hint of bling."

And finally, what other trends are on your radar for spring?
"I am super excited for peplum, because it gives the illusion of the ideal figure and really looks good on all body types. I'm also all about fun prints, and mixing and matching them for a truly eye-catching ensemble. And, I can't get enough of leather, which is another unexpected trend for spring."
