iPhoneography 101
In this must-Instagram-everything day and age, it’s a given that our phones go beyond texting and tweeting. Which means just about everyone needs to step up their photo-snapping game. That’s where Makeshift Society’s latest workshop comes in! At this iPhoneography 101 crash course, we will learn expert tricks like composition, lighting, and editing — all on our handy smart phone! The class will set you back $35 bucks, but we have a feeling it will pay forward in follow requests!
When: Tuesday, January 8, 6 to 8 p.m.
Where: Makeshift Society, 235 Gough Street (between Fell and Oak streets); 415-625-3220.
Cost: $35; Buy tickets here!
Freya Prowe Opening Reception
If you're entranced with folktales like Hansel and Gretel, this latest exhibition is worth following a few breadcrumbs to get to. Fine artist Freya Prowe creates fairytale-inspired pieces and is unleashing a whole new exhibition on Friday. This collection serves to evoke the complexities of growing up, and since it’s on display at Paxton Gate’s kids shop, we can especially tap into our inner child.
When: Friday, January 11, 6 to 8 p.m.
Where: Paxton Gate’s Curiosities For Kids, 766 Valencia Street (between 18th and 19th streets); 415-252-9990.
Thee Oh Sees
There’s nothing as unforgettable as seeing one of your favorite bands live. And for fans of Thee Oh Sees, you’ll treasure this Friday forever when you catch the group’s show! Hear the pop-folk tunes like Flood’s New Light and The Dream and etch the moment in your mind as one of your top-notch memories of 2013.
When: Friday, January 11, 9 p.m.
Where: The Independent, 628 Divisadero Street (at Grove Street); 415-771-1425.
Cost: $39.95 to $51; Buy tickets here!
Autocult 2013 Calendar Release Party
We’ve been aware that Pretty Pretty Collective is a rad go-to for pretty locks ever since they showed us a duo of awkward-length styles. So, when we heard the salon is throwing Autocult magazine's 2013 calendar release party, we knew we’d be in for a treat that goes beyond our tresses. Expect hot rods to be revved up on the scene, as well as overflowing libations, and head-bobbing tunes. Plus, you can scoop up your cal for $5 less than the normal price. Score!
When: Saturday, January 12, 6 to 10 p.m.
Where: Pretty Pretty Collective, 3290 22nd Street (at Valencia Street); 415-282-2002.
Just East of Here Exhibit Opening Reception
If you’re from “Just East of here,” then this exhibit will be like a slice of home. A duo of artists, Ahren Hertel and Jaxon Northon, have created an entire gallery full of works that derive from their homes in Reno, Nevada, and Hertel. More specifically, the pieces stand to reflect the conflict between human and nature interaction in the region. Color us curious! Not to mention, the opening reception will be a boozy and DJ’d affair that’s not to be missed.
When: Saturday, January 12, 6 to 10 p.m.
Where: Modern Eden Gallery, 403 Francisco Street (at Powell Street); 415-956-3303.
