Inside Rebecca Minkoff's Amazing Nolita Apartment — & Insane Closet

Patterned denim, floral jumpsuits, luxe leather satchels, and flirty mini-dresses — Rebecca Minkoff's spring '13 collection had it all. Not surprising, coming from the designer who does it all. From effortless separates and pumps to sunglasses and tech cases, Minkoff's eponymous label is a one-stop "duh" for fashion insiders and shopaholics alike. So, no-brainer alert, we knew we had to get more details on the creative's busy but somehow put-together home life. Our solution? Breaking and entering. Inviting ourselves over to her downtown digs to see how this mom keeps her endless engines of cool on full throttle.
Naturally, we found her Nolita pad to be just as laid-back as her line, with the same signature polish: warm, flooded with light, print-friendly but not overwhelming, and just the right amount of cheeky. While we could get insane life-envy flipping through our exclusive home tour with Ms. Minkoff, we'd rather just settle on becoming her best friend — BFFs share closets, right? And her next viral video with Hilary Rhoda and Leandra Medine? We're sooo in it.

What's the one trend you can't stand?
"I’m really not a fan of those giant platform shoes from the '70s. I certainly never say never, but I can assure you no time soon will you see them from me. I like a much sleeker, sexier shoe."

What does your NYFW prep routine look like?
"I would say my prep routine consists of a lot of coffee, too little sleep, and lots of castings, fittings, and interviews. I try to work out in the mornings in the days leading up to my show to increase my energy level, I drink lots of water, and relax at night (when I can) with a mask! Oh, and lots of visits from my son at the office."

What are your best date spots in NYC? And your secrets to making time for romance when you're a busy working mom?
"My husband and I love going to Il Buco, which is close to our apartment. It’s cozy and romantic with delicious food. As for making time, I don’t think there is any big secret other then you have to be conscious to carve out a night once a week or every other week for just the two of you."

How has having a child changed your work day? Any advice for working moms in NYC?
"I was always the type to stay in the office until 9 p.m., and I would only leave after every email was answered. So, after having Luca I had to switch up my schedule a bit. Now, I have a hard out at 6 p.m. unless it’s Fashion Week. I then go home, feed Luca, bath him and put him to sleep, and then at around 8:30, I go back to work, checking emails, designing, and looking for inspiration for future collections."

As a designer, do you find the urge to shop constantly, or do you find yourself dressing solely in your own designs?
" I would say a bit of both. I definitely don’t shop constantly; I wish I had the time but between work and Luca, it’s impossible, so I like to pick things up while I’m traveling."

Do you change up your interiors seasonally? Where do you shop for decor items?
"Not really, it’s basically the same all year round. But, in the summer, we definitely have more plants than in the winter. I’m a big fan of shopping for home goods at flea markets and while I’m traveling. I also like a good DIY project."
