I was in middle school back in 2005 when a book-focused internet marketplace site called Amazon announced a new feature called Prime, a membership service that promised to make shipping online orders faster and easier. Back then, the possibility of ordering your entire shopping list — from new bed sheets to the latest drugstore mascara — and finding it all sitting on your doorstep two days later — may have sounded like it was too good to be true. But here we are, over a decade later, on a Monday dubbed Amazon Prime Day, a Black Friday-esque event where prices for over a million products plummet for 36 hours.
