Alessandro Michele isn't one of those designers who cleans the slate each season and comes up with a completely new idea. Rather, he keeps building upon the DNA he's created for Gucci ever since taking over the house in January 2015. His new signatures — things like florals, kooky sunglasses, unexpected layering, brocades, and glitter — are evergreen and seasonless, and every six months, Michele continues to push them one step further.
For spring 2018, Gucci honed in on ‘80s nostalgia — the hairdos, the toys, the characters. Watching the show was like falling down a rabbithole of the fantastic and the sublime. But beneath all the covetable jackets and bags (ones we'll inevitably see all over street style slideshows come February), there are items that make us go: "Of course this is in a Gucci show!” Here's 14 of those pieces.

1. This hairdo’ is so ‘80s it killed the radio star. It’s both Melanie Griffith in Working Girl, and Motley Crüe; a feathered 'do that wants to be Lady Diana Spencer and then decides it just wants to ROCK! (And yes, we see those fantastic I just ate a popsicle lips and we can’t stop thinking about them either.)

3. We’ve heard of business-casual, but what about black tie-casual? Gather ‘round folks, because Michele has done it again! There is so much good that can emerge from what first seems ridiculous: a pink tuxedo jacket, a red shirt with a white ruffled trim, a black floppy tie, and blue running shorts. This look rates extremely high on the Gucci-meter.

5. The 11th Duke of Devonshire, Andrew Cavendish, had a penchant for creating sweaters with his own comedic slogans (he probably started the make your own merch trend without even knowing it). Last year, an exhibit was held that showcased his talent, with sweaters emblazoned with phrases such as “Bollocks!,” “Life’s A Bitch and Then You Die,” and, you guessed it, “Never Marry A Mitford.” He had, of course, married a Mitford. She had a good sense of humor it seems, and you know who else has a good sense of humor? Alessandro Michele.
