L.A.'s New Lipstick Obsession Is So Flattering

L.A. beauty trends last about as long as a metered parking spot on Abbott Kinney. Just this past month we've seen '80s-inspired pink lips, brassy undereyes, and upside-down makeup dominate the red carpet — then quickly get replaced by the next hot new look. But we have a feeling the latest makeup trend in L.A. could be around for a while — and it's undoubtably the most flattering of them all. Enter: the new nude lip.

Somewhere between beige and rose, with a modern purple undertone, mauve lips are slowly usurping classic nude and red. And it's not just in Hollywood. Mauve showed up at show after show during NYFW, too. (But more on that ahead.) And luckily, it looks great on most skin tones and in most textures. Gloss? Great! Prefer matte? That's rad, too. Can't spend more than $8? We got you.

Ahead, we've rounded up five of our favorite mauve looks from the past few weeks to inspire you to try it, too — plus a Fashion Week bonus that we can't wait to cop. When the bandwagon is this flattering, it's silly not to jump on, right?

Go Stained & Glossy
To say Yara Shahidi is one to watch is a gross understatement — which is why the up-and-coming beauty star has our full attention. Here, she rocks a blotted-out take on the trend — with a slight sheen to boot.

Try: This gloss is beautiful alone, yes, but we recommend starting with a mauve lip liner first to nail the tone. This formula in Satin Mauve is perfect — and under $2!

Make It Matte
Olivia Culpo wears matte lips a lot — but it's this in-between shade that we're lining up to copy. Go full and bold with a liquid lipstick in the exact same color; it's the cooler cousin of nude and somehow even more wearable.

Try: This cult color from ABH is a real crowd pleaser — and will give you a near identical look. Just be sure to apply with surgeon precision.

Embrace A Satin Finish
Kate Bosworth traded her go-to stable of wine, fuschia, and vibrant orangey-reds for the deepest and most dense look in our slideshow. The version is incredibly fresh, thanks to the classic lipstick finish.

Try: This mauve shade is universally flattering — and can be layered to get even more color payoff. Just make sure you blot between applications. Tip: Blotting papers will help lock your first layer in without getting fuzzies on your lips, like a tissue can.

Too Faced La Creme Color Drenched Lipstick in Honey Bear/Toasted Mauve, $22, available at Ulta Beauty.

Try A Sheer Gloss
Kerry Washington is well aware that glossy lips are back — which is why she's been dabbling in the trend more and more as of late. We love this pop of color because it's soft, but polished.

Try: This plummy shade looks like a nude in the package, but it's actually a brown-meets-rose shade on lips. Bonus points if you smudge a deeper hue underneath for night.

Make It A Throwback
Lily Collins is the ultimate beauty chameleon — but she always comes back to a slightly-shimmery, brown-tinged lipstick look. Does your heart also skew '90s? This look is the one for you.

Blot, Blot, Then Blot Again
Like we mentioned before, it's not just Hollywood that's falling for this neutral right now. Mauve made it's mark on the NYFW runway, too. Here, at Public School, models wore a diffused-out mauve. Tip: Use your fingers for a smudged, cool-girl effect.

Try: Believe it or not, but this humble shade from Maybelline lipstick hit the runway at more than just Public School — it was worn by models at Alice + Olivia and La Perla, too. We're playing favorites, however, with the previous look. Pat it on with your ring finger for the most on-trend way to wear it.

Maybelline Color Sensational Loaded Bolds in Midnight Merlot, $7.49, available on Maybelline.com.
