What could be more awesome than girl rockers re-creating the album covers of artists like Katy Perry, Janelle Monae, and Haim? Nothing really.
The pint-sized rock and pop stars play their grown-up counterpart versions of album covers including Teenage Dream, The Electric Lady, and Days Are Gone for the Girls Rock Camp Foundation's Project Record Remake. And these girls aren't just taking on contemporary stars like the ones mentioned above. They also pose as David Bowie on Aladdin Sane, U2 on The Joshua Tree, and Blondie on Parallel Lines.
While there is, of course, something adorable about seeing kids play dress up in this way, there is also nothing cooler than seeing girls assume rock star-level confidence. As the foundation's website notes, the project produced "powerful (and hilarious!) images playfully provoking big questions about how we mentor girls, and what we tell them about why they can be in music and culture."
There's also a fun bit of rock star lineage in one of the images. According to a press release, the girl playing Debbie Harry on the Blondie cover is nine-year-old Ava, the niece of Gossip front woman Beth Ditto, who has been a camp coach and is on the foundation's advisory board. Ditto said in a statement that she "coached at Camp for several summers and it was so cool to watch girls find their voices...to play singers for them like Nina Hagen, Cibo Matto, Ma Rainey, Yoko Ono, opening up the idea of what 'singing' is and what kinds of voices are beautiful." She added that "seeing [Ava] transformed into a tiny scowling Debbie Harry was unbelievable."
