Workers On This Coast Hate Their Jobs

Social media can be used for a lot of things — to keep you connected to your friends, help you find restaurant recommendations, and so on. Now, as it turns out, it can be harnessed to determine which coast has the more satisfied workers. As Mashable reports, job site Monster and social media analytics company Brandwatch joined forces to come up with a detailed analysis of career-related tweets from March 2014 to March 2015. For each state, they looked at the ratio of #lovemyjob tweets versus #hatemyjob tweets. The findings: West Coasters are by far the happier campers. Specifically, the Western half of the country has the highest love vs. hate tweet ratio, while the East Coast has the lowest ratios. Going further than geographical data, the report also includes analysis of when people are more likely to complain about their jobs on Twitter. The winner: July, presumably when summer FOMO is particularly unbearable as people are chained to their desks. Furthermore, the report explains that way more people boast about their job than complain about it: "In the course of a year, there were over 201,000 mentions of the phrase 'hate my job' and over 942,000 of 'love my job.'" Interestingly, however, a 2014 Gallup poll shows different findings. According to Gallup, only approximately 30% of workers are actually enthusiastic about their work. (We'll chalk the discrepancy up to people's tendencies to brag on social media, and the realization that there could be serious ramifications when you bash your job on the Internet.) Perhaps we should take the report with a grain of salt, but at the end of the day, the West Coast now has yet another reason to believe we're the best coast.
