The world of healthy eating lost an icon this week: The founder of Weight Watchers, Jean Nidetch, died yesterday of natural causes at the age of 91, The New York Times reports. After she was mistaken for being pregnant in 1961, Nidetch decided to tackle her lifelong struggle with her weight. She soon began hosting meetings in her Queens, NY apartment for those who also wanted to lose weight. Her approach emphasized community, sharing stories, and making responsible food choices, alongside physical activity. A few years later, she, her husband, and two friends incorporated Weight Watchers. Today, there are more than 36,000 Weight Watchers meetings taking place around the world. And, U.S .News & World Report ranks it as the best weight-loss plan out there, because of its holistic approach to food. The plan goes beyond simply counting calories; it encompasses heart-healthy eating and even has a specific program for those concerned about diabetes.  Nidetch passed away at her home in Parkland, Florida.
