There was a lot to behold at the Alexander Wang for H&M launch party this week — muscular male models in gym attire, Jessica Chastain, a rare performance by Missy Elliott — but our eyes were on one woman and one woman only: Sharaya J.
Sharaya is a hip-hop singer and dancer who released an insanely well-produced video, complete with multiple dance numbers and a Missy cameo, for her song called "Smash Up The Place" last fall. Shortly thereafter, she received a phone call from her manager. "She asked if I knew Alexander Wang. I was like, 'Uh, yeah!" The designer had requested a meeting with the singer at his showroom downtown. "From the moment I met him, I knew he had a gold spirit, perfect energy...he was humble and dope at the same time." Ever since then, Wang has been an avid supporter. "He always looks out for me," she says.

It's been almost a year since that happened, and Sharaya's been busy: She managed to record an EP which will drop early next year; and she just finished filming the video for her new single, "Set It Down." While we were chatting with her on the phone, she was en route to being signed by Wilhelmina Models. "I'm so excited!" she squealed.
But, even though her music has us pressing repeat, it's undoubtedly the singer's hair that caught our attention. "At first, I dyed it pink, but then I felt like pink was becoming the new black, so I needed to switch it up," she says. Genius struck in the form of the throwback Bobby Brown video "Every Little Step," in which the singer rocks a Gumby haircut — "a fade, but slanted at the top," Sharaya explains. After that, deciding on a color was simple: turquoise, her lifelong favorite.
"Believe it or not, I do the color myself," she says. (She even orders her own Manic Panic.) "Because I bleach it so often, I have to keep it healthy so it will maintain its height. I always use olive oil deep conditioners to keep my hair moisturized, and I keep a good can of hairspray around so it doesn't go anywhere. I like a spritz plus a blowdryer."
To finish it all off, she's been known to rock a matching blue lip on more than one occasion — something she raps about in her debut single. "My makeup artist usually starts with a blue liner and then goes in with a lip palette, mixing in greens and teals," she explains.

When it's all put together with one of her impressive outfits, it's basically the formula for magic. "At the end of the day, you have to own the look. I do what I'm 100% confident in," she proclaims. Meanwhile, the rest of us will continue to fret about getting bangs...
