It might have to do with the fact that it's getting chillier out, but we've been seeing way fewer Birkenstocks around these days. Sure, they were the best-selling shoe of summer, and we're still dutifully wearing our Milanos until our toes protest, but it's been a lonely existence of late. Birkenstock wearers, where did you all go?
The brand is attempting to figure out a way around this seasonality, and these shearling-covered sandals seem to be its solution (a note to American Birkenstock fans: these images are from their international site, which has a different stocklist. Perhaps bolstered by the knowledge that the fashion set would indeed be into doing weird things with furry insoles (as evidenced by the wait-list for Céline's fur-adorned sport sandals), Birkenstock released winter versions of its Arizona, Madrid, and Boston styles that allow wearers to walk on two personal shearling carpets all day long. The only problem? Well, they're still sandals, and unless you're living somewhere where you celebrate the holidays with daiquiris and sunscreen, these are a soggy, impractical, frostbitten disaster waiting to happen (even if you do them up Olsen style).
Opening Ceremony promoted the Boston clogs on its Instagram this week, tucked among Low Classic brogues with an equally impractical hairy exterior. We're venturing a guess that these are a Southern California-only shoe, to be worn with a hoodie, leggings, and a Frappuccino; in which case, we'll resign ourselves to packing our Birks away until spring. Winter is coming, and unlike Jaime Lannister, we're not down to lose a limb.
