Conor Oberst Files Lawsuit Against Woman Alleging Rape

Photo: via @conoroberst.Though the accuser has remained hidden behind a veil of anonymity, Oberst believes her to be Joanie Faircloth, and has filed a libel lawsuit against her. Gothamist reports that Oberst described Faircloth as "a pathological liar with a well-documented history of spinning tales and fabricating sexually themed stories about others to benefit herself." A statement released by his team asked Faircloth to annul her allegations. The libel lawsuit is, according to TMZ, for over $1 million, which Oberst's team says will be donated to "charities benefitting the victims of violence against women."
That is, if he wins. Commenters on the Gothamist article cite the likelihood of Oberst's success is slim. rsjem1979 writes: "The burden of proof is on the accuser, and proving a negative ('I didn't rape ________') is no small feat, and that's only step one in a libel case." What follows will be attempts to prove Oberst's reputation has been tarnished, verify the accusatory statements were made public (the comments have since been deleted, but exist elsewhere), and that the statements were, indeed, about Oberst. Faircloth has, as of today, remained silent. (Gothamist)
