After winning gold in both Torino and Vancouver, the speed skater hoped to bring home his third consecutive medal for the 1,000-meter. But, unfortunately, that dream has come to an end. Stefan Groothuis of the Netherlands took the gold, while Davis, surprisingly, didn't even place at all. The American legend finished in eighth place, which was still a higher ranking than the rest of his teammates who completed the race in ninth (Brian Hansen), 15th (Joey Mantia), and 28th (Jonathan Garcia). With eight out of the nine medals awarded in men's speed skating going to the Dutch, it definitely seems to be their Olympics.
Another surprising Sochi loss: Shaun White. The snowboard star also hoped to bring home a third consecutive gold medal. Instead, the flying tomato finished fourth in the men's half-pipe, criticized for making "several uncharacteristic mistakes." While these amazing athletes didn't reach their goals in Sochi, at the end of the day, the Olympics is about celebrating the best athletes in the world — regardless of rank. (USA Today)
