Liz Cheney appears to be the sole dissident in a family known for supporting gay marriage — her father campaigned to legalize same-sex unions in Maryland, and Mary has been an important figure in the fight for gay rights. Poe and her partner took to Facebook soon after the TV segment to express how upset they were about Liz's "traditional definition of marriage."
“Liz has been a guest in our home, has spent time and shared holidays with our children, and when Mary and I got married in 2012 — she didn’t hesitate to tell us how happy she was for us,” Poe wrote on Facebook. “To have her now say she doesn’t support our right to marry is offensive to say the least.”
Mary chimed in later to share Poe's post and include a message to her sister: “Liz - this isn’t just an issue on which we disagree - you’re just wrong - and on the wrong side of history.” We consider ourselves lucky that our sisterly strife is limited to mostly trivial things, and not such fundamentally opposing views as who the other person is allowed to marry. Hopefully, the upcoming holidays will give the Cheney sisters an opportunity to talk about the issue face-to-face — and in private. (The Atlantic Wire)
