Gloria Steinem Stumps For Team Sinéad In Miley Cyrus Feud

This is your end-of-day Miley Cyrus and Sinéad O'Connor status update. The singers' beef may have shriveled in recent days, but what do other celebrities think about the defused feud? Better yet, what does Gloria Steinem think about it? Vulture asked the septuagenarian women's rights activist this very question at last night's Women's Media Awards: "I think they have different views of the world, and I would much rather be O’Connor," she said. "I mean, she’s a serious human being....But you have to remember that Sinead’s background — she’s been sexually abused. She was courageous in pointing out sexual abuse by the Catholic church. I’m sure it does pain her to see a young woman being oblivious to the endangerment of sexuality."

That kind of language shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone who knows that Steinem has a complicated relationship to porn and often relates sex for sex's sake to violence. Now what we need is a rebuttal from Camille Paglia, Steinem's pro-sex feminist counterpart.

Absent Paglia, however, Vulture also spoke to Rosario Dawson about the Cyrus-O'Connor tiff. Compare/contrast Steinem's view with Dawson's analysis of the young starlet's role in relation to gender politics: "I am interested in the idea that they’re kind of flipping the bird to that and just going, 'I'm doing my thing.'" Close enough, we guess.
