"My brain makes drugs to keep me slow," go the first lines of Neko Case's heartbreaking new track "Night Still Comes." Set to footage of freeways, parking lots, and other bleary images of urban sprawl, the track and it's accompanying lyric video details a crumbling relationship with stark, often searing intimacy. "I revenged myself all over myself/ There's nothing you can do to me," sings a damaged but defiant Case to the country-tinged melody.
The song arrives as the second single from Case's upcoming new LP The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight, The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You, whose grand title hints at conflicted feelings of grief, hope, and resilience. Ultimately, "Night Still Comes" sees Case distilling her relationship into one simple metaphor: "You never held it at the right angle," goes the refrain. As she repeats the line it becomes a cathartic reassurance that Case will emerge from her troubles as strong as ever.
