Gluten Free Dunkin’ Donuts Are On Their Way (Yes, You Read That Right)

We know, right? We mean, we're not going to sit here in front of you and say that eating a delicious, glazed gluten-free Dunkin' Donut is any healthier than, say, not eating a doughnut of any kind — but, golly, is this ever impressive. Yes, for folks suffering from celiac disease, gluten sensitivities, or those who just want to cut gluten from their diets for general health reasons, this could be a serious win.
As Dunkin' Donuts' executive chef (who exists!) said in a email seen at Bloomberg, "We recognize the importance of providing our guests with many options, including alternative choices for people with food and dietary restrictions.” Indeed, but it's so much more than that. With the popularity of gluten-free diets and increased awareness of those with serious sensitivities, offering gooey, delicious treats to an underserved market is a surefire way to make some big money. By getting out ahead of their competitors and being the first major chain to offer such gluten-free indulgences, Dunkin' could nail down a growing base of consumers. In addition, this move will undoubtedly compel some rivals (Krispy Kreme, Starbucks, and other fast food companies) to devise their own offerings, expanding options across the market.

And as for those of you who have their doubts (and seriously, who wouldn't?) it seems the company is being pretty genuine in their efforts here. Not only will the treats be gluten-free themselves, they'll be packaged and displayed separately to prevent any flour contagion coming from their other, glutinous offerings.
Now all you gluten-free folks have to do is sit back and wait — your treats should be ready later this year. Time to make the donuts, indeed. (Bloomberg)
